Well, a Rep/Salesman for United Moving Company was here yesterday and gave us a cost for moving our stuff to Colorado. Cost, almost $7,000. Not necessarily because of the amount of things we have to go, but because of the distance it's going. Colorado isn't right around the corner from Florida!

Besides that, $700 of that $7K is for a shuttle service for the movers. The trailer will be a 53' one, which would be hard to maneuver in this complex. Secondly, the manager no longer allows large moving vans in the complex. They have to park on the street, outside the complex, and use some type of shuttle to take our stuff from our apt. and garage to the van. That means, more labor! Load stuff on the shuttle and then remove/load onto the van outside of the complex.

There is also an additional amount, included in the $7K, for United to do this on a Saturday. They don't load on Sundays and we want to leave either on Sunday AM or Monday AM. Certain days during the week, they charge more than other days.

Our Coordinator also told us that this time of the year, many, many people are moving...……..so moving is more costly. Unfortunately, there are no other long-distance moving companies in our area. Mayflower is here, but they won't be going our way. Everything else is "local".

We've already paid a part payment and will pay the rest on delivery in Colorado, which could be up to 10 days after we get there.

How far by road is Colorado from Forida?...how long will it take the movers to get there?

    When are you leaving?

@Cody Fousnaugh ... I hope you are happy when you get there. There is no place I would spend that kind of money to move to .
I am sure you both will be glad when it all over... wish you well.

It is 1,788 miles from our apt. complex to Loveland, CO.

Depends on how many stops, for loading or unloading, they have to make from here to there. We have a span of 10 days, starting the 9th of August. So, once we get there, which HOPEFULLY will be either the 9th or 10th of August, if they haven't arrived yet, will have to "tough it out" with what we will have in our vehicle...….clothes in suitcase, a blow-up bed/sheets and a couple of pillows and a few other things.

Well, we sold our 1997 Dodge RAM 1500 truck, so we'd have the money to get our boat transported to Colorado. That was $3,500. We had to kick in $500, from Savings, to make the whole payment.

And, money (credit card) for the gas we'll need to get us there from here, a hotel/motel room each night we're on the road and food.
One thing for sure, moving isn't cheap, especially that distance. But, we definitely couldn't do it ourselves, with either our stuff or our boat. However, we are doing the packing ourselves...…….and that, in itself, is...……..WORK.

Sort of funny, but when we showed the salesman a photo of us at Cheyenne Frontier Days last July 2018, he said (with a smile), "yep, you're right, you don't belong here". He's been to Colorado, but only during the winter months for snow skiing.

He also told us that our cost is much less than he's seen before...…….and he's done a lot of moving quotes. He was the Coordinator for PGA's David Duval's two moves, and one of them moves was to Colorado. Each move cost David $50,000!

$7K is a lot, but it could have been worse. Wife and I both agree.

is your new apartment the same size as the one you have now? is it a temp rental, or do you think it'll be your forever home?

It's a 2-bedroom, but somewhat smaller in size. We will be living on the bottom floor with two apartments above us.

As for the "forever home"...…….just depends on how much noise is there and/or how much we really like, or end up disliking, the complex. Generally speaking, and this comes from our high-experience complex manager...……"people don't stay in apartments for more than a year or two, but there are those, and we have a few here, like yourselves, that have stayed much longer."

Let's hope you enjoy the apartment and don't need to move again for a long time... :)

I was just thinking that $7k doesn't sound that bad. It cost nearly $8k for us to move from Houston to Baton Rouge in 1988. (But that was a company transfer so it didn't cost us a penny.) :D Oh, and it was a total move cost; they packed everything in our house and boxed it all up with inventory lists, then delivered it to our new house.

I hope your move goes smoothly and that you are as happy in Colorado as you want to be.

@Cody Fousnaugh It's a lot of money, but not a bad price at all. I would've thought it closer to $13,000. We only live once. Avoiding our dreams due to the cost of the pursuit seems like not enjoying the money we've worked for.

Until they weigh the truck's contents, the cost projected is almost always subject to change. Such "estimating" allows competing movers to "guess low" in an attempt to secure the job.

We have used professional movers twice, both times employer-paid. Canon City, Colorado to Ft. Wayne, Indiana was $9800, and that was 30 years ago. Ft. Wayne to Phoenix in 1979 I never learned the cost. All other moves I have done myself. The load to Ft. Wayne was 20,000 lbs. This last move, and hopefully the final one (excepting to the grave ;)) was well over 20,000 lbs. using my own truck:

Well, it does seem like very few-to-any folks here in Jacksonville, FL, move back to ice/snow, let alone to Colorado or that Region. Although, at Walmart a few months ago, we talked to a couple that had already made one trip back to Minnesota with some things and was about to make the second (final) trip back with the rest of their things. He was wearing a Minnesota Vikings (NFL) baseball cap that drew my attention. They told wife and I, "after taking a job transfer here (to Mayo Clinic), we decided we simply couldn't handle the heat and humidity here. We know there are many folks here that love Florida, but we aren't those anymore."

Well, I've got to get back to wrapping different pieces of small glass into bubble wrap. Yesterday I done the glass shelves inside my wife's China Cabinet, the sliding glass doors on her cup/dish display case. But, still have more glass to wrap and few more things to pack/box or put in plastic storage bins.

I grew up in the UP of Michigan, spent most of my working life in Southern California and Southern Texas, then retired in Maine, so I guess I am out of the norm too. I hope that Colorado proves to be everything you hope it to be, Cody.
