Musk Ox Herds That Didn't Get The Memo

    Their double fur coat and huge heads give the impression that they are larger than is the case, with the avg. adult weight 700 lbs. That's rather small for bovines. And that same fur that keeps them warm overheats their bodies after running only a short distance.

    So one day, Mother Evolution advised one of the alpha leaders to form a laager and this advice has served them well, especially when surrounded by a pack of wolfies.

    Nevertheless, quite a few recent documentaries shows herds standing there disorganized or even attempting to outrun the predators, in imitation of their stupid cousins, the North American bison. All to no avail, of course.

    Anyway, I find this to be surprising.

    Natives here eat a few musk oxen, but the real prize is that hair you spoke about. It is collected by the women and knitted or woven into qiviut, one of the warmest fabrics around...and probably one of the most expensive.
