It is quite likely that I have, in addition to other physical problems, diabetic neuropathy. It is also quite possible that I have peripheral artery disease (PAD) One or both ? Hmm unknown.
In any event, if I try to walk 100 yards, I begin to have pain in calves and thighs. However, before I reach 150 yards, I MUST stop walking (and if possible, sit down to rest) because the pain is way too heavy.

I was watching a youtube video on "THE 5 WORST FOODS FOR DIABETIC NEUROPATHY, and they said that one of the very worst things you can do is drink SODAS (ANY KIND OF SODAS).

12 years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes T-2. I had been a life long drinker of Pepsi , usually 2-3 cans/day times 50 years. After the diagnoses, I gave up REGULAR Pepsi, but the Dr said it was ok for me to drink diet Pepsi, because it wasn't supposed to raise blood sugar levels. And as a result of what the DR said I stitched to Pepsi Light and other diet drinks. I also make my iced tea with Splenda.

However, in the above mentioned video they said that artificial sweeteners can seriously mess with the body and especially the bodies nerves.

What, if anything do you think about artificial sweeteners . Especially Splenda.

SIDE NOTE: It may be a coincidence but 4 months or so after switching to Pepsi Light and other diet drinks I developed IBS-D. This happened within a few months of moving to Mexico. A coincidence ?

Any thoughts you may have on this subject would be gratefully received. Thank you.

Yes all of the sweeteners can cause issues. They were created in order to give diabetics a treat once in a while...not to consume daily in everything eaten or drank - or large amounts. Here again Moderation is not in Americans vocabulary. Aspartame, causes me terribel body pain, I know for a fact that is the problem. Bottom line,,, I ditched all that crap and if I were to use one would be pure Stevia.
We now eat sugar, real butter, 2 percent milk and etc. Yep we be plump, but happier try not to over indulge.

Dr. Jason Fung is one of the best experts on diabetes treatment and lifestyle changes. He has written several books, and the main one about diabetes and insulin would be “the Diabetes Code”, and he also has a youtube channel with excellent videos.
He explains about non-nutritive sweeteners and how they work. He is also a nephrologist, and started studying diabetes because most of his kidney patients also had diabetes and were overweight.

One of the things about these sweeteners that I didn’t know before, is that even though they do not raise your blood sugar, the sweet taste does activate your body to release insulin because it thinks it is getting sugar and will need the insulin.
When the insulin is released, then your blood sugar will become low, triggering actual hunger; so in this way, the diet soda can actually make you hungry.
The more times you trigger insulin, the more insulin resistance your cells have, and the more insulin is released because of the resistance, and the worse the diabetes becomes.

I enjoy carbonated drinks a lot, but I got a soda stream machine and now make my own carbonated water to drink. If you like the taste of plain carbonated water, you might try that instead of the Diet Pepsi.

Here is one of Jason Fung’s diabetes videos, and you can subscribe to his youtube channel if you are interested in learning more about what he says about diabetes and health.

I'm also diabetic & I won't touch any artificial sweetener. They are a chemical brew.
I use 1/2 tsp of sugar in my coffee. Even a whole tsp of sugar is only 4 gms carbs & 18 calories. In my opinion, real sugar (in limited amounts, of course) is better & safer than chemical sweeteners; at least it is used for energy.
And, I wouldn't get nutritional advice from doctors; that's not what they're trained in.

Both wife and I are Diabetic 2, but we use one packet of Spenda in our coffee each morning. We use to sprinkle a packet or two of Splenda on raw fruit we bought, but don't do that anymore. Only use it in coffee now.
