I think I did an OP awhile back about Captain Chesley (Sully) Sullenberger. A new movie depicting his ditching of his Airbus in the Hudson River, after hitting a flock of birds, has been released, entitled "Sully". It is showing at the AVI Hotel Theaters here next Wednesday. We are definitely planning to see it! Frank EDIT: US Airways Flight 1549 afloat in the Hudson. January 15, 2009.
I'll want to see that, love historical, movies taken from true stories. I just finished watching The Finest Hours, and I can't recommend enough
I personally stay away from movies based on true events when I was old enough to understand what is shown before the movie begins that not all projected in the movie was real. That the names have been changed da da da da da. It's not entertainment to me.
I saw the ad for this movie, and then just now watched this trailer, and this is definitely a movie that I want to see as soon as it comes out where we can watch it from home, and rent it. I also remember this happening, but more than that it happened, and people lived though the crash, I hadn't heard any more of the story.
I remember the event, and want to see the movie. For some reason, I have a hard time seeing Tom Hanks as Sully, but I'm sure once I see it, that opinion will change. Maybe I'll be able to use my Google Points I've accumulated by doing surveys and rent it before too much time passes. I think it'll be just what the doctor ordered. I could use something uplifting.
I really want to see this movie, I would have gone this weekend, but it didn't work out. Maybe once I get my mortgage payment out of the way and have a bit of disposable income, I will be able to go. I just think it would be fascinating, and it was a great story at the time. Interesting that it came out the same time as the 20th anniversary of 9/11, I wonder if it was released to coincide with that.
The "sully" movie has just been released in Australia ,we went and seen it while in Adelaide a few days ago ..it's a very powerful movie and as usual Tom Hanks played a very good part in the movie ..they tried to tell him only One engine was effected by the birds ..but he proved ( both pilots were correct ) what a wonderfull outcome to save the lives of all onboard
My wife and I finally got out to see it today. Seniors day, 8 bucks, includes popcorn & drink! I saw Sullenberger extensively interviewed not too long after the event. He was extremely cool, calm,. collected, and of utmost intellect. I realize Hanks played scenes as expected of him. Eastwood having both directed and produced the flick, likely had a lot of input. My wife greatly enjoyed it, more so than I. Mainly, I suppose, due to the fact that despite hearing aids, I'm sure I caught < 1/2 of the dialogue, virtually none of it, in scenes where a cellphone conversation is taking place, the view being on the receiving end, the "talk" being little more than a whisper (I think). Not wanting to be too critical, but I thought a bit more of Sullenberger's youth might have been of interest: how and why, as a kid.......was his interest in flying developed early-on? I recall nothing said at the time regarding NTSB's intense scrutiny and disdain for the handling of the emergency. Way too many "what-ifs" in the argument for making it back to a runway. Glad they showed the probable outcome. The government agency was portrayed in the movie in very typical Eastwood form! Fit well with descriptions of his disdain for government, when he was a Mayor of Carmel, CA: A Look at Clint's Life in the Political Arena; 1986-88 n January 30th, 1986, a local Carmel, California newspaper first announced the news: Clint Eastwood was running for mayor -- salary, $200 a month! Like Dirty Harry, he was fighting bureaucracy, waging a war on bylaws in his adopted hometown of Carmel. His campaign certainly made the media's day but when he got a whopping 72% of the poll, even former President Reagan phoned with envious congratulations. See http://www.clinteastwood.net/mayor/ We enjoyed "Sully" greatly. Frank
