No, it's not a management position. McDonald's hires managers usually from within after having attended Hamburger University, although store managers don't always attend their official training program. My nephew did, though. He took an entry-level job at McDonald's to help work his way through college, and ended up staying with McDonald's, retiring as a regional manager before the age of fifty. Despite what are actually pretty good wages, McDonald's is having trouble finding people who are willing to work. Yet, they did very well during the COVID shutdowns since the majority of their business was drive-through anyhow, and they were set up for it. Meals that cost $5-6 only a few years ago are approaching $15 now. I bought a double-meat with cheese, french fries, and a coffee yesterday, which cost upwards of $14. Every McDonald's drive-through that I've seen in the last year has had help-wanted signs, yet they are short-staffed.
It is no wonder that they are charging so much for hamburgers now, since they have to pay so much for help. A while back, Bobby and I were talking about a malted milkshake, and Dairy Queen seemed to be the only place that still made malted; so we went there and ordered a burger and a malt. It cost as much as going out to dinner at a regular restaurant ! It seems that the grocery stores are going to self-checkout, and the fast food places will either do mainly delivery or have the automated cashiers where you just order and pay from a machine and only the cook will need to be there.
A quarter pounder w/ cheese-deluxe w/ fries and a drink was just under $11 here last week. Seems like a lot but I think a burger at most regular restaurants is still more. I don’t eat out nearly as much as I used to but once in awhile the craving hits for bad food.
I had commented elsewhere that part of McDonald's current strategy is to raise the prices on their food because demand exceeds their capacity to fill it. Wages are part of it, but since more people want to eat there than they can serve, they are raising their prices to charge more per-meal and still remain busy.
Dairy Queen seems to have doubled it's prices from last year. Last year they had a $5 lunch special; hamburger or chicken, fries, small drink and desert. Those self check outs at our grocery stores don't work well here, so far. Too many walk outs without paying. Walmart seems to be the exception.
I recently read that some McDonalds are paying $25/hour for your basic burger-flipping job. That's $50,000 a year, assuming you don't work overtime.
I don’t have much of any problem with people attaining great wealth. Where I do have a problem is when they use that wealth to try to run others’ lives, like George Soros, Bill Gates, etc. Too often, they can’t be content with owning an island and yacht, they have to ram whatever their pet agenda is down the throats of every one else on the planet; as if being wealthy makes them wiser than the rest of the rabble. To me greed isn’t the problem. To me the arrogance of wealth and power are the problem.
