President Obama Commutes Chelsea Manning's Sentence - Rolling ... www.rollingstone.com/.../president-obama-commutes-chelsea-mannings-... 1 hour ago - Under the terms of President Obama's commutation, Chelsea Manning is set to be released in five months, rather than in 2045.
In related news, Julian Assange (Wikileaks) had promised to allow himself to be extradited to the United States to stand trial if Bradley Manning's sentence was commuted, and he is apparently going to do so. I don't know what this will mean for Wikileaks. Source: ITV
Amen, and let's not forget the damage he's done JUST since the election of President Trump. I heard him say when I briefly could stand to even listen to him stumble through his last press conference I guess it was, how Chelsae what's his name had suffered horribly through the time he was incarcerated. He of course omitted to speak of those that were killed because of the information that was leaked. But that's typical obama, tell the good things about his administration, but never admit to any of his overwhelming mistakes, which WILL be his only true legacy in history.
The general at Manning’s trial said there was no life lost because of the information. So manning did something he was not to do but also showed a lot of injustice done by others. In my opinion he should not be given a medal but he should not have been treated the way he was. I think that there should be a department free from government influence that all whistleblowers can go to and they decide if the information should be released and with no action taken against the whistleblower. There are lots of people who would come forward to help the public but are afraid. Obama has imprisoned more whistleblower than any other president.
I agree with you on this one, Martin. I didn't hear of any life lost because of Manning. I may be mixed up on this but didn't Assange do the same thing with Wikileaks?? Maybe I'm confused.
You're right and wrong. No one has been able to cite any lives lost due to the information released by Manning. But what s/he did was not the same as Wikileaks because Wikileaks simply publishes the stuff while Manning actually stole it. In 1969, Daniel Ellsberg stole military secrets that he passed on to the New York Times, which published them. Ellsberg was charged with espionage, theft and conspiracy, although he was later acquitted, but the New York Times was not charged for publishing the documents. Manning is like Ellsberg, and Wikileaks is like the New York Times. Wikileaks simply published the stuff, Assange didn't steal it.
One of the agenda items they want to check off with the charges against Assange is to establish that they get to decide who the legitimate media are, making it legal for their appointed media to publish such items but illegal for someone they don't consider to be the legitimate media to do so. This is significant because even new start up newspapers or other news media would no longer be covered under the freedom of the press clause, and the government would control those who were.
