As a young man, this rendition all but brought tears to my eyes, as they played it on all the radio stations. Today, it never fails to do so. Even as I listen to it in my mind while lazily floating in our kiddie pool. I may be becoming a soft-hearted old man dwelling on the envious past. The song told me that, someday, I would be doing this, feeling this way, if I lived that long. I have lived that long. Now, I'm sorry for the infractions I rendered, but cannot un-do them now. So, I listen to this refrain:
Here is the other, more powerful, than the first. It introduces the idea of raising family while being close to the earth. Homestead, raise food, father children, love of wife and family, die with dignity. ALL my kind of ideas. Frank
I remember in my teenage days when the stereo in the living would be playing old songs of Perry Como, Harry Belafonte and some other contemporary, my siblings and I would make faces at each other as if saying that my father is an old man with that kind of music. I never imagined that I would be of this age when I cannot relate to modern music anymore. In fact, rap music gives me a headache. My favorite station for the car's radio is one which plays songs in the 1970s up to 1990s and rarely 2000s. I was in groove during the popularity of the group ABBA with the Dancing Queen. But I also like the Stylistics and Spiral Staircase. Maybe when I grow older, I would be musing of my past while listening to those music.
Danny Boy That's why God made the radio (Beach Boys) Stranger On the Shore When you were sweet sixteen (and many more)
@Patsy Faye If memory serves, "Stranger on the Shore" was a beautiful instrumental played primarily by Clarinet by Mr. Acker Bilk. I believe he was British, but could be wrong. Frank
I think that the instrumental by Mr. Acker Bilk is probably the most well-known version, and I love that one, too. My favorite one though is the version which is beautifully sung by Andy Williams, who has always been a favorite of mine. The words to this song are as beautiful, and hauntingly sad, as the melody is, and when I hear the instrumental, the words are always there , going through my mind and heart.
@Yvonne Smith - well I've never heard that version Yvonne, thank you Even sadder ..........I agree Andy has a lovely voice Its a beautiful tune and perfect for the clarinet
