This week I started gathering materials for building my shed. I couldn't find cinder bricks at Lowe's or Ace Hardware both were out of stock. I waited over a week and finally to my chagrin I bit my bottom lip and headed over to Home Depot. I asked the first employee I saw where the cinder bricks were located and he quickly responded. First star. I pushed my cart to the rear of the garden center and began loading four that I needed. I started back to check out and an employee asked me if I needed help. I thought 'Too late. I saw you watching me as I was loading the bricks.' but said 'I got it, thank you.' Strike one. Picture little ole me heaving those bricks into that cart. So off to checkout and wouldn't you know that I got in the wrong line which was 'Customer Service.' No wonder that guy behind the counter was looking at me so strange. The thought was interrupted by the lady behind the window 'Miss, this is Customer Service, you need to go to checkout.' Heavy sigh. I began to push my cart and then she said, 'I don't want to see you pushing that cart, I'll check you out here.' Alright, Five Stars! That was Sunday. Yesterday, Wednesday, a two family dwelling was being rehabbed several houses from where I live and there was a pile of materials that had been discarded. I was like 'Whoa.' So today, Thursday, I asked a young man if it was okay if I could get some of the wood. 'Sure, we are going to be hauling it off, tomorrow, or whenever.' So that's were I was this afternoon loading my Jeep. I hit the motherload, free lumber! I was eager to get home and start removing all the nails. I gotta 'er done too. So, weather permitting, I hope to have my shed built this weekend. So I'm happy and I know it, clapping my hands, stomping my feet, saying 'Whoohoo!'
I used to tear down the old buildings for lumber when I was younger, but I can't imagine doing it now. I even straightened the nails and used them. I don't have that kind of patience anymore. The thing I liked about the old buildings, was they had shiplap that was so nice for building sheds. Is this going to be a storage shed or a real she shed? I am anxious to see photos of every stage.
Quit picking on my "Girls with Tools" bestie. She keeps me motivated and I don't mind looking bad as she keeps me thinking and dreaming.
A storage shed for the overflow in the carriage house. I cleared it (carriage house) once (shared that post some time ago) to make it my she shed but life happens and I'm the only one with space for family to store their things for free. Not to forget my own stash.
The great part of that analogy is that yes, it took some time to build but even after a few thousand years after completion, much of Rome is still standing. You’re not just building a shed, you’re building history!
Introducing today's DIY apprentice crew: my grandson, Clayton (left) and friend Chad (right) were picked up at 8:30 a.m. Clayton informed me that they need to be back by 12 noon. (sigh) So I'm scaling back today's work plan. Chad was willing to learn a new skill of using a power drill. I gave him the drill to get the feel of it as I first said "Safety is always first, you do exactly what I say." Clearing area to make way for the first frame which was for the back of the shed after I realized I only had three posts not four.(sigh) What's that saying 'Measure twice' cut once.' I should have checked my supplies against my laid out plan. (sigh) So here's the front frame in place now. All the while my mind is thinking "Now I need a fix for the back frame using one post. I got it! to be continued...
I want it to have a floor it just depends on how much wood pieces I have to make it happen. If not enough I thought maybe putting rubber mulch down.
