Into an estuary of some sort. Baggage compartment is submerged, all people safe. Pets confined in cargo hold may all be dead.

Should further safety measures be instituted to avoid pet deaths in cargo?

I hate to hear about the pets, but honestly I'm surprised they weren't "emotional support emus" or whatever in the cabin. I have always thought that putting pets in the cargo hold is terrible. Isn't it really cold in there at altitude?

We never ever send our pets by air... always, always we transport them by road..

My daughter has Boarding kennels, and often has to transport pets from the Uk to her place in Spain... it would take 2.5 hours by air...but she always chooses to transport them by sea and by road... a 3 day journey...

I agree with you, Holly, and I think that sending a poor little dog or cat into a cargo hold would be terribly traumatizing, even if the plane trip went as planned.
Since smaller pets can be carried and taken in the main cabin as a carry-on item, I think that would be the only way that I would even consider taking a pet on the airplane, unless there were really extenuating circumstances that made any other way than putting them in the hold impossible.

When our beloved friend, Ina, went on her trip; she was able to take her little dog, Izzy, everywhere she went.
She had him go through all of the training necessary as a service dog, and Izzy was even able to be in restaurants with her.
I remember that Ina said Izzy even won some money at Las Vegas gambling (until they told her that dogs were not allowed to gamble)).

It was a DOD (Department of Defense) plane that came from our military base in Cuba to here in Jacksonville, FL. The plane skidded off the runway and into about 10 feet of water in the St Johns River around 9:30PM or so, Friday night. This is when a t-storm was going on. Because it was a DOD plane, landing at an Naval Air Station, it made National News. As of yesterday noon, the plane was still in the river.

Yes, I would think that putting a pet in a cargo hold would be cruel. Even worse, is when people take their pets with them to another country. After the cargo ride, they are in quarantine for a long period of time.
