What I don't understand is...........how can an area be ready for this kind of weather, when this kind of weather is so, so rare in the area?

There was a Reporter, on The Weather Channel, that was reporting from a city yesterday evening and not a snow plow in sight. Streets were completely covered in snow and, basically, no vehicle travel at all seen.

Well, it turns out that the power grid wind mills (that cost 2 to 4 million dollars EACH) broke in the cold. (see pictures online)

The best discussions seems to be on https://almastruthsearch.com/texas-grid-failure-stirs-feud-between-cities-and-state/

concludes (or a conclusion on the page by someone)

“This whole episode represents a catastrophic failure of management.”

(over the last few decades?) ....

It was and is a choice of what to do , where to spend the money, and bad decisions all year for the last year especially, but apparently that's not a new thing in Texas (nor in other places). That link seems not to have any malware, but I use ABP so don't know for sure. I just copy the page then read it from the copy instead of leaving a link open if there is any concern.

Other areas were ready. Other areas did not (for the last several decades) experience “This whole episode represents a catastrophic failure of management.” that areas not ready for the cold did.

Cody, I don't think you are really grasping the situation. Texas is having these problems because they cheaped out when constructing their system. If they had built to National code, there would not be these problems.
With not being built to code they cannot connect to the national grid. They gambled with never having severe weather and lost. Now their citizens are paying the price.
Texas is so busy hating America and still bemoaning their loss of independence. I hate that people are suffering, but this once again illustrates that decisions have consequences
But you will notice that our new President Biden, immediately authorized federal aid. Guess the guy is a Nancyboy, What red blooded 'murican would help out a bunch of folks that hate him!.

Frank--I agree, if desperate the pool water could be used. Of course the pump isn't running so there are more leaves and debris in there, plus the larger issue is the chemicals...not necessarily bacteria. That's why I strained the water through coffee filters, to try to remove some of the chemicals before boiling. It still smells quite chlorine-y though. :D

We had power all night but still no water. This is really annoying, y'all.

Why don't you take your negativity elsewhere? A large part of the electrical problem is the "GREEN ENERGY" -- 25% of Texas energy comes from windmills... that froze. Texas has a viable grid that could be connected nationally at any time. Please provide your source that it is not "to code," and shut up with your hate. We really don't need that right now, so stop being an ass for once in your life.

"Even today, ERCOT is also not completely isolated from other grids — as was evident when the state imported some power from Mexico during the rolling blackouts of 2011. ERCOT has three ties to Mexico and — as an outcome of the "Midnight Connection" battle — it also has two ties to the eastern U.S. grid, though they do not trigger federal regulation for ERCOT. All can move power commercially as well as be used in emergencies, according to ERCOT spokeswoman Dottie Roark. Shoulda’s, Woulda’s and Coulda’s never solved anything in the middle of a crisis. If the dog hadn’t stopped to take a pee it woulda caught the rabbit.

I’m more interested in what the powers that be are doing to solve the immediate problems than I am with why or how it got the way it is.
There are now less than a million folks in Texas without power but in my book, one is too many in that kind of weather.

Personally, I cannot offer any other help but to pray for those who need warmth, shelter and a good meal. Come to think of it, I’m sure there’s one or more rescue missions in each city that’s affected so they might need a few bucks to help them out.

No one on this forum except Texans knows anything about what is really going on there and how much the people are suffering and for a bunch of non-Texans to offer up new suggestions instead of trying to help out with at least a bit of prayer ...................

Really mr know it some ?

All the people who know, you're saying, are not on this forum !?

Praying, then saying, "Go and be warm..." .... instead of telling the truth, instead of giving what is needed... yep, good idea? nope.

p.s. there are countertop gravity powered (fancy way to call them) WATER FILTERS that filter contaminated water with charcoal material, etc, and make it potable (drinkable safely).

Plus iodine for water like the military world wide has used for centuries.

And VINEGAR... yep... good old vinegar - especially the oldest (200 years) remedy in the country, and perhaps the world (thousands of years) ... a little vinegar in a glass of water... if or with iodine, etc ....

Going to mex and go, eating vegetables with 'germs' that cause travelers problems (very watery problems fast),

those at the same dining table , sipping vinegar in water, don't get the travelers dilemma.

So, what the heck do you have to do with it? Can you solve their immediate problems? Are you going to write your senator and tell him what he needed to do about a Texas problem?
No one here or anywhere else who isn’t directly associated with the problem in Texas knows what the whole truth to the debacle in TEXAS is all about.

AND.....you’ll note that I indicated that donating $ AND prayer are good ways to help out without getting in the way of the big boys.

Frankly, I don’t even know why I answered you Jeff. If you could form a decent sentence without all the same rhetoric over and over again then it might be worth my time.

“This whole episode represents a catastrophic failure of management.”

The catastrophic failure of management. i.e. "the big boys"

If it were possible, if someone had been able to get them out ... well then, maybe there would not be this problem today.

As long as those who were responsible and continue to be responsible for the failures are still "the big boys" and are the ones calling the shots, directing the failed industry(-ies), there's no hope for resolution.

Whether or not there is a solution people will accept remains to be seen. Some groups did accept the solution perhaps even a century ago... but most people are too selfish and greedy... including especially "the big bosy" you seem to trust in fail mode.

We've had power all day but temps are supposed to be record lows again tonight, so who knows what's going to happen. @Trevalius Guyus , how are things at your place? My son near Smithville finally got power at around 8 last night.

Our water is finally beginning to trickle so I hope the pressure will normalize soon. I am SO READY for a shower, and SO GRATEFUL for baby wipes and bottled water. :D:D:D
