My daughter for her birthday yesterday got a beautiful potted mum. I was wondering if anybody had success in saving mums over the winter, While remaining in the pot.?
Over the years I have had pretty good luck with simply keeping them in a cool sunny addition but just one night below freezing and they are done and last year finished my collection including some unusual doubles. My cousin has very good luck with keeping them out of the pot in a cool basement..... It also seems to make a difference on the exact type of geranium they are, I found that the basic single reds are much easier to over winter than the whites, the pinks are somewhere between.
I think that's what I'll do after the blooms fade I'll take it out of the pot and put it in a tray and store it in my basement. Thanks
We used to have mums when I was a kid in Virginia right outside of DC, and they overwintered for decades...but those were outdoor plants. If your daughter puts tea leaves on the soil, it will change the ph and the blooms will change color.
