Beautiful, big, Blackberries on sale for $3/lb, how could we resist? But, freezing a large quantity, we cannot, the limited freezer volume is full-up. So what better way than to preserve them indefinitely in alcohol? More enjoyable way of "eating" them, too, those antioxidant benefits preserve in the wine, the experts say. 3-gallon batch, crushed, fermenting one day now. Below that, my brand-new wooden mixing spoon, permanently stained a beautiful purplish color by the "good stuff". Won't wash off!
WOW !!! Looks good.. I have lots (and I mean LOTS) of rhubarb that is cut up into small pieces and frozen.. What do you suggest I do with them?? I was going to make a compote with the rhubarb, in a large pot, add a frozen orange juice, frozen strawberries, and cook it down till it is a compote.. Add my sugar or sweetener (brown sugar) at the end..
Year before last I picked five gallons of blackberrys. Some are in the freezer, most were canned. There is a winery about 15 miles from here that specializes in a variety of fruit wines So we buy their wine and use our blackberrys for cobblers and shortcakes.
Last year, when @Ina I. Wonder came to visit me, she gifted us with three beautiful blackberry plants. Since they were just babies, there was only 1-2 berries on all of the vines, and they disappeared before they were quite ripe enough to eat. I suspect that either a bird or a squirrel must have eaten them. Anyway, this year, they are already sprouting and growing; so I am hoping that we will get a few more of the berries from both the blackberries and also the raspberries this year. There won't be enough to wonder what to do with them; but at least a few to nibble on, maybe. The blueberries have only ever had a few berries, too; and they seem to be slow growing; but every year they look a little better. We don't seem to have any wild berries near here; but I am hoping to plant a few more berries this year. The grape vines have not yet produced anything; but they are also only a year or so old; and this ground is just not the best for growing anything, I think.
I'm looking for blackberry juice on the island of Oahu and I hope Walmart has them. Walmart has the cheapest juices yet! I've just read about blackberries for being good to keep you in very good health to keep your immune system in top shape. When you get older the worst thing is a cold or flu, well one of the worst things anyway, so I thought I'd start drinking blackberry juice and elderberry juice too.
Krissttina, you've got to start reading labels. Almost any juice you get at walmart will have 10% or less of the juice you want. Even those That say 100% juice will have 90% or more of a cheaper juice and very little of the juice you want. Don't pay any attention to the front of the bottle, read the ingredients list on the back. A cheaper price is not always a bargain, especially if you are looking for something for health benefits.
I remember a time when I wanted to buy some Cranberry juice... looking at the label: apple juice, grape juice ....etc. Where in the heck was the cranberry juice that was printed on the front of the bottle ????? You always have to read the darn labels on everything! Otherwise you come home with a bottle of sugar water.
@Bonnie Thomas : Real Cranberry Juice is exceedingly astringent and "pucker", not to mention lacking in "sweet" taste as well. For that reason, the makers, knowing of folks' interest in the cranberry's health benefits, markets any number of combination juices having some cranberry in it. Personally, I take cranberry gel capsules, and have had no recurrence of the bladder infections once being experienced. Frank
I'm mostly looking for Vitamin C content, and I don't like a sweet taste in any juices I drink. Lately I've been buying Tart Cherry Juice (cheribundi brand).. it costs more, but even that has some apple juice in it. I just like to drink different juices without sugar. And to me, artificial sweeteners are even worse.
Several companies, one being Langer's, offer pure, 100% fruit content as called out, whether cranberry, pomegranate, etc., and list ingredients as cranberry juice "from concentrate":, which should mean just water added. Also, no sugar is added. Bear in mind, always, most fruit contains fruit sugars of various kinds such as fructose and sucrose. Frank
