    In the first episode of the documentary The Ascent of Man, Bronowski explains that two square miles of animals and plants were needed to sustain up to two prehistoric adults, and they had to move constantly by hunting and gathering.

    Also, it was the fusion of both sides of the brain (which gave them the gift of communication) plus the opposing digit (the thumb, which allowed them to make things with significant levels of precision) which gave prehistoric man incredible power: with fashioned weapons and working in packs, he could take down animals many times his size, and thus provide himself with even more nutrients.

    Thus began the ascent of man. Tadaaah!

    Even more amazing is the fact that Germans of the era even knew what a lion looked like. Must have been a different global environment.
