And all of the beef, pork, chicken, lamb as well. Although, I had a friend of my wife's, who is basically a vegetarian, tell me "why should I care about farmers and ranchers? I don't live that lifestyle or around any and wouldn't".

With that statement, wife and I don't talk to her anymore!

Lon, you did open your thread by saying the word "grow" which would imply crops, not livestock. If I was to ask a farmer "what do you grow?", he going to answer me "corn, wheat, soybeans". Not livestock he has.

You are in the business of farming if you cultivate, operate, or manage a farm for profit, either as owner or tenant. A farm includes livestock, dairy, poultry, fish, fruit, and truck farms. It also includes plantations, ranches, ranges, and orchards and groves. This publication explains how the federal tax laws apply to farming.

Actually, Lon, your opening statement should have read: "Thanks to all the grow and raise the food I eat." IOW, the word "raise" is for any eatable livestock. The word "grow" is not for livestock.

Just remember, my high school years were on a small Duroc hog farm in northeastern Indiana. Local farmers "grew" field crops and "raised" hogs and beef cattle. That's how I was taught the difference.
