https://waymo.com/waymo-one-los-angeles/ I heard from a source yesterday, this Google Product is out there wheeling around town....Not For This Gal.
I looked at the website, and right now it is only LA and San Francisco, and Phoenix; but is said it will be soon in Atlanta and Austin, Texas. I had never heard of this before either, but I saw the video of the robo-taxi that Tesla just came out with, which is a similar idea, except you would be riding in a Tesla instead of whatever car Google uses. This is still a young industry, but I think that it might be the direction we are headed eventually. Cars are already doing a lot of things that we never expected them to be doing. I have been following along in the stories from @Beth Gallagher and @Nancy Hart and their new vehicles, and being glad that we have a 25 year old Ford Ranger.
I'm still getting used to the headlight dimmer switch being on the steering column and not on the floorboard. I wonder if it has back seat sensors: "You two knock it off!" I can hardly wait for the first video to get posted.
Back in the 90s I read an article in The Economist regarding self-driving vehicles. The article said that in order for them to have a beneficial effect on helping traffic flow, only 1 vehicle in 10 needed to be self-driving. It had something to do with the way people drive in congested traffic and how the self-driving vehicle could anticipate rather than react. Fast-forward to around 2010 when I was working with a government contractor. I asked one of the Transportation Market guys about it, and he said that the 1-in-10 was still accepted theory.
