I've decided to use weights along with exercise. I have been using 5lb. but yesterday got the 15lb. bar and two 5lb. weights we had here. I couldn't even curl the 25lb.s without forearm pain. So will just use the bar till I build up enough muscle to do the curls. It did bring my sugar down really good. So weightlifting is much better than just walking and dancing around to music for me. I'll still walk, dance but now weights will defiantly be in the program.
I have no aspirations toward becoming a weightlifter but, as we age, it's all too easy for us to lose our muscle tone altogether, especially in the arms, I think, so I have a 5-lb and a 10-lb weight by my desk that I lift a few times a day, not so much to build up muscle as to avoid losing it.
I agree and I also like the BIG difference in my sugar count. That made me happy for now and hope I can continue to use them for tone and diabetes. Like you said you can lift qeights in your chair if you want to. I hear large muscle groups are best, so I also do squats, but very very easy and slow, don't ever want another Bakers Cyst, that had me laying on er hospital floor pain was so intense, since I found a way to treat Bakers Cyst at first sign.
Be careful and don't use weights that are too heavy to begin with. You could damage your muscles. Start low and work your way up.
I haven't lefted weights in 4 days,'ain't it funny how time slips away'. I'm back at it, first jack up the music, to get me moving ,then go at it. Why don't some join me, my weights are 5lb. then 15 finally 25, reps with small weights can be a real challenge just starting out.
I think I have some 1 lb hand weights and 3 lb...?? (Can't remember if 3 or 5.) I got them for PT after surgery but I haven't used them in many months now.
I have 2 6lb hand weight, a bar that weights 15;b.s and two 5lb. weights I use for the bar, Sometimes I just use the weight of the bar.
I've used light weights, 5 and 10 lbs but have not in recent years. I injured my shoulders at the gym many yrs ago and deal with that stuff. I had great results with Berberine when I took it every day for a year, sugar came down from 120 to 84.
I have some 10 pound weights but I don't use them anymore. I decided they were too heavy for me. I hold the 5 # ones down by my side, bend elbows and slowly raise them up to boob level, hold a second or so then lower them. Hold them down, bend elbows, then raise them outward to almost shoulder height, pause then lower them. Hold them at waist level, rise up on my legs to tippy toes, pause then lower them.
I've read that the greatest benefit from weight lifting for old folks is that it strengthens the skeletal system. So if you know any old folks, pass it on to them
It is so easy to get off tract, last 2 days not as much exercise. Need to get back to it, first warm up mopping these floors I've put off,did vauum but now guess hav ot vacumm again,,then lift some weights.
I was surprised a couple of years ago after sitting around with my leg that I could not put dishes away I up onto the second shelf. WTH???? So I started lifting weights. But I did it laying down on the floor. Up over my head, out to the sides, down by my thighs and then alternating in arcs in the different directions. I have not been using weights lately but probably should because we will be putting up hay for winter soon. I actually have been working outdoors so am not that bad again.
Mary it is surprising how fast we lose stamina. "Use it or lose" they ain't kidding. May not completely lose it but it sure will take some time and effort to get it back.
