We are veterans of calamity since we moved out of my husband's ancestral home. The rented apartment was susceptible to flooding although the floodwaters are up to the gate only. When we moved to a rented house, the floodwater was knee-deep... inside the house with the furniture in the living room submerged. When we got a bank mortgage to purchase this house, we thought that the calamity is over. But calamity strikes again...

In 2009, our town was inundated by neck-deep floodwaters for more than 24 hours. It was a coincidence that we were out of the house and got stranded in a gasoline station from Saturday morning to Sunday afternoon. It's unbelievable that we survived with a few crackers and chewing gum plus 2 bottles of drinking water. There were 5 of us, my husband and I and our housemaid and also our 2 dogs. You can imagine our hunger that night when we had nothing, not even water. It's amazing that our dogs coped with the calamity. If only we could swim our way home, there were lots of food in our food cabinet. Our housemaid even offered to sacrifice, she would go home to get food. But we didn't let her because the floodwater was scary, the current was strong.
