I almost started a thread about this, but I decided to just put the link here if anyone has any interest. This the 1965 Historic debate between James Baldwin v. William F. Buckley Jr. at Cambridge University on the question: "Is the American Dream at the expense of the American Negro?" I enjoy watching historical events; it's amazing how some things change while so much stays the same. Hearing Mr. Baldwin's words led me to download a few of his books to read and I'm anxious to get started. This video is about an hour long.
No, the man and kids in the truck were unhurt, but the lightening totaled the truck. I assume the electronics and everything were fried. That was filmed by the guy's wife; she was in the car following him.
The tires do not insulate the vehicle ad I used to think. The safety comes from the metal shell of the vehicle conducting the electricity to Ground. Those who are inside are more or less protected because they are not in contact with Ground. But still, that one has a high Poop Factor.
From an online article... "Her husband and children were unharmed as the steel-framed vehicle acted as a “faraday cage,” in which the current of the lightning bolt goes around the metal body and typically exits to the ground from the tires. The strike will avoid people as long as everyone is inside the vehicle and not touching the outside metal. This is also a reason aircraft are often struck by lightning without major damage." https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/07/07/lightning-video-flash-car-explained/
I actually had something similar to that happened to me when I was about 19. I had my cousin sitting in the front seat of my car and it was a downpour so I pulled over to the side of the road and lightning actually hit the nose of the car and in the rearview mirror I saw the flash of it coming out the Rear. We did not feel a thing I'm told the rubber tires protect you.
I don't know why the Youtube Shorts won't display here; they always show up as a link. Anyway, this guy makes me smile. https://www.youtube.com/shorts/sZ2zlg-ZwKM
