I drove by a church this afternoon that was advertising "Ashes on the Go". Apparently you could just drive into the parking lot and get your Ash Wednesday blessing without even leaving your car. The ultimate in convenience. I'm really not sure what to think about this. Discussion?
It is not truly in the spirit of Ash Wednesday. It is supposed to mean the beginning of a period of fasting, Abstinence, and Penance. If you don't don't feel it is important enough to attend the service, you shouldn't bother at all. Although, in jest, I came up with an idea in college to offer a Drive-Through Communion Service offering Pretzels and beer.
Clip from 2010 by a disgusting Sky news presenter. Sorry clip wont load for some reason. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowb...ng-Joe-Bidens-Ash-Wednesday-cross-bruise.html Just found the clip.
I don't think it is disgusting Tom..just indicative of the most of the UK not being church goers in the same way as the USA people are, but as we can hear Kay Burley ( who you for those who don't know is one of our top news presenters)... was obviously told during the clip, and apologised profusely at the end....
Hence the need for “Fat Tuesday” in Louisiana. Get the party out of your system because it’s gonna be ashes on Wednesday which marked the start of “Lent and lean” for the French Quarter. I had a guest who came in to my restaurant in New Orleans every Thursday at 1:00 PM sharp.. He would bring at least 3 others with him and once brought in a dozen buisiness people and all of them had soup to nuts including an array of wines with each course of the meal. Two days after Mardi Gras, my staff was waiting for his secretary to call and arrange for his luncheon but there was no call. Instead, he came in by himself on schedule and had a small salad with a cup of tea. It was Lent and he was a devout Catholic so he gave up his big meals and wine for the duration which also meant that I had to give up a nice profit.
Did she say sorry for this clip. Interviewing an MP who stated the Burka should be banned and she brought up Simon Weston. She makes Don Lemon look nearly normal.
You can get your ashes to go here in Lafayette to. This really doesn't surprise me since everyone wants "instant" everything now days.
I am going to have to ask a priest where they get those ashes. Are they sold straight from the Vatican or perhaps bought on Amazon?
Here you go Bobby....this is where those ashes come from. https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/where-do-ash-wednesday-ashes-come-from-94988
I think most churches buy from suppliers, but, as the article says, if you have the skill and motivation, you can burn your own palms if you have the cooperation of your parish members...to bring their palms back.
I don't know what the liturgical requirements for the ashes actually are, but I do know they are (in Catholicism) supposed to be the ashes of palms from the previous Palm Sunday service. It is only a sign, however, and has not real religious consequences. Ash Wednesday is not even a Day of Obligation to Catholics; it is just supposed to signify penance and the beginning of Lent. It is not in the same league as communion wafers or the consecrated oils and chrism.
