The reason Vietnam became such an issue was dropping the ball at the close of WWII and returning ownership of Vietnam to the rightful people the "Vietnamese"..... not the French A-Holes who ruthlessly ruled Indo China and murdered and pillaged and plundered the riches of Vietnam. All that Ho Chi Minh wanted at the close of WWII was their country back which it should have been. They were not card carrying communist then but were forced to become communist. They were Patriots who simply wanted their freedom to rule their own Country not foreigners.

I forgot to mention at the close of WWII they actually put Japanese Prisoners of War as Policemen in Vietnam because France was on it's knees and in no position to send men and money to Vietnam. That had to be the ultimate insult to the Vietnamese People, put the same butchering thugs as policemen. My airfield I was stationed was actually a Japanese Bomber base in WWII. The 121st hangar was only a small remnant of the airfield of that time but the French were using it before they were kicked out. Even today the French still has a lot of input and clout due to the inner marriages over the many decades before and after WWII. It is still deeply rooted in their language as well. The only words most of we GI-s learned were all French but we were too stupid to know that it was French because the Vietnamese were trying to communicate with us using the French phases they knew. :D

''Yeh, there aren't many (any?) Asian people who would like to be lorded over by Asians of a different nation. Their implied inter-country caste system is more rigid (and more personally felt) than India's. When meeting someone from that continent, you do not want to "just take a stab" at guessing where they are from. No no no no no. To only a slightly lesser degree, the same applies to South Americans.

Years ago, I read somewhere that Ho Chi Minh had requested US assistance, but was forced to turn to China when we opted to weigh in on the other side.

You honestly gotta wonder how much is due to incompetence and how much is intentional sabotage.

Yeah, there is some talk that the Viet Minh represented by Ho Chi Minh had petitioned the U.S. for help but France was a direct ally so it was a no go…or something like that.

However, the truth of the matter is that Truman sent supposedly non-combat military “advisory” groups to the Nam in 1950 which is very much similar to what we’re doing in Ukraine now.
Also of note is that the U.S. spent some 3 Billion beans supporting the French military between 1950-1954.
Note: That $3 Billion would translate into roughly $30 Billion today.

The question still stands with me as to why is our entrance to the Vietnam war not listed as 1950 instead of some 10 years later? We were sending arms, spending money, sending soldiers and U.S. soldiers were getting killed.

I frequently wonder about that. For example, we should - and could - have a friendly relationship with Russia, which would benefit us a whole lot more than bowing to China all the time.

Actually it was Eisenhower who sent just a handful of advisers while he was in the white house. The number was around 4. It was Eisenhower who put the nix on using nuclear bombs on the Vietminh. We had 0 support by our allies at the time to use nukes. He did allow some unmarked aircraft old C-119s to drop supplies to the French Forces. Kennedy was the one who sent in a much larger group of advisors. MACV was our first large force put into the country and it was primarily a supply and training assignment. When General Westmoreland became the Supreme ground commander he stopped MACV from being in charge of ground forces or the major combat arm of forces. One of the best Pre Vietnam War movies was Go Tell The Spartans, black and white and Burt Lancaster as the lead role. It took place with him in charge of a small detachment of men training Vietnamese. A lot of drama in the movie

Oh forgot, the reason it was not mentioned earlier as being involved in the conflict it was a police action. heh heh It was a pretty hot police action I can tell you that. If only I could play everything in my memory cells regarding to what I witnessed and participated in would be a good book. Two times at 20 feet my aircraft was hit at 30 feet directly under our belly into the wiring and weapons console. I was out to the right scanning the area and noticed the gun was pointing same direction and never moved. It had an AK round in the corner of the little circuit board that controlled guns and rockets selection. Pilot on left seat lost his camera because he had set it under his seat and it took a hit, the cyclic also took the same round.

Yeah, police action. I do not recall arresting anyone nor reading anyone their rights.

That said, because of the Korean War, I had at one time believed that Truman didn’t involve himself in Vietnam but
    ……………………
    Copy / Paste
State Department officials in Asia warned Harry Truman, who became president in 1945 upon Roosevelt’s death, that French rule of Vietnam would lead to “bloodshed and unrest.” But Truman did not share his predecessor’s anti-colonialism and ultimately acquiesced to the reestablishment of France’s prewar empire, which he hoped would shore up France’s economy and national pride.

No sooner did the French arrive back in Vietnam, with the guns of World War II barely gone cold, than fighting broke out against Ho’s Viet Minh forces. At first, the United States remained officially neutral, even as it avoided any contact with Ho. In 1947, however, Truman asserted that U.S. foreign policy was to assist any country whose stability is threatened by communism. Then the outbreak of the Korean War in 1950, plus the flow of aid from China and the Soviet Union to the Viet Minh, prompted Truman to reexamine Vietnam in a Cold War light.
    ………………………..
In short, Truman issued his Truman Doctrine which was seen by the Communist governments as the initial call for Cold War in which we, the United States first got financially involved in Vietnam. Truman started the ball rolling and Eisenhower supposedly reluctantly followed.
By the time Eisenhower was voted into office, the U.S. had already supported France to the tune of nearly 80% of their financial and weapons needs in Vietnam.

Then, it was under Eisenhower and the French defeat at Dien Bien Phu in ‘54 at the hands of Ho Chi Minh’s forces when, (drum roll) fearing the Domino Effect that Communism would spread even to the U.S. shores, we jumped in head first.

Of course, that’s what the history books are reporting which is a mixed bag of truth and fiction as many of us now know.

Note and Edit: Some history books say that it was under President Johnson’s leadership that the first deployed American soldiers were in 1964 but the first American military person was killed in 1956 hence the Vietnam War political stance of: if ya can’t convince ‘em, confuse ‘em, came into full effect.

The Ball Rolling was inserting a puppet government in the south, there was a deep resentment in their political choices wrapped in Religion. Catholic and Buddhist and Christians with a few more tossed in. The puppets didn't hesitate to harass the religious group not of his background. There were two coup s carried out in the south , one the president was put in an armored personnel carrier and shot to death, the second was the section of the Army that did not want to be under control of another religious group. It was all slated to fail from the very beginnings. Now that killing of the sitting President was setup by our own CIA, we did things like that in the early 60s and he wasn't the only person killed by our CIA by any stretch. I think the worst crime committed was when Johnson lied about the Navy being attacked by Patrol Boats which he then leveraged the Gulf of Tonkin act with that fancy name but really the start of that new phrase Police action. Up until that act we were not legally allowed by the constitution to send in force without congressional approval, so as usual the liberal lied and colluded with other people to finally get full permission to get a lot of us killed and much higher wounded . It is sad that over 50, 000 were killed but the number of severely wounded was up in the extreme high numbers. I don't think I ever met many men that had been wounded that did not have life long problems. One personal friend I knew had his left thumb taken off and also lost one eye from grenade fragmentation. He had 100 percent disability but still managed to work for an egg warehouse in Houston under the table so he did well financially but I am sure he would have preferred to have his body parts back.

The thing is, if we do some comparisons between the earlier activities of Vietnam and what is happening in Ukraine, the similarities are somewhat astounding.
Few people know that we were involved in Vietnam as early as 1947 and with that, few people know that we were involved with the Ukraine/Russian debacle since 2014 and even earlier than that if the truth be told.
We went into Vietnam with money and supplies since Truman’s leadership the same as we’re now doing with Ukraine under the Biden administration and earlier, the Obama administration.
Note: Donald Trump froze the assets going to Ukraine and ordered an investigation into the Biden/Ukraine relationship which, went nowhere even though the threat Biden made as Vice President (to protect Hunter) to the Ukraine government was televised.

To me, it’s a blast from the past with the possible exception of why we’re so involved. Vietnam was about rubber and sugar and very little about the Red Horde whilst Ukraine is pretty much about nuclear strategy with little to do with Putin wanting land that once belonged to the motherland.

    Back to Biden:
The DOJ has now indicted the whistleblower that provided evidence against the Biden family regarding their Chinese corruption. We are turning into the dictatorship that we claim we are against in Putin, where political enemies such as Trump and others are indicted or imprisoned. How sad for our once-great republic!

I would bet my bottom dollar that DOJ’s actions are at the direct instruction of the higher ups in this administration; get in front of it, do everything they can to discredit him. This is the same thing being done to trump by the democrat machine. In my lifetime, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more concerted effort by a party to subjugate the country.

Since the Executive branch is responsible for enforcing the rule of law and the DOJ is a part of that same branch of government with the head of it being the President of the United States, is there really any doubt?

Biden has said that he doesn’t consult with the DOJ but then he also has said repeatedly that he never talks to Hunter nor his brother about their businesses.
And….why wouldn’t Joe consult with a department head that is under his purview? Ridiculous.
