Because I live in an area that is mostly very liberal people that love to make short statements against others and then say I was just joking, after they are called on it. The difference in a joke and a jab, is in the wording. I use the word liberal not to indicate a political party preference, but a way of communicating and interacting with others. People presenting themselves as tolerant, yet make intolerant statements mask as tolerant.
I got you, it's just confusing for us Brits because we don't use politics or political references in the same way you in the USA do....
