It's an ugly evil creature from Scandinavian folklore that traditionally hides under a bridge ready to leap out and attack unwary travelers. An Internet troll is someone who hides behind a username and and posts nasty hurtful messages in social networks. Celebrities on Twitter are often their targets.

I think I will opt out of this thread. I have researched internet troll, and have found that it is a gal thing. If they get a hate on for another gal, they call them a troll. I can't be part of something like this. It reminds me of a group of teens in the school yard calling names to another little teen who 'just doesn't fit in'.

I don't think people "hide" behind a nick name, I think everyone uses a nick. If that was the case, everyone on the internet would be hiding and called a troll.

    Carry on gals.

Oh, sorry to hear you do not feel comfortable with the story line with the reference to a troll, since you are the one that started this thread. Here I will post a sign to keep away the internet trolls. I think the troll in this story is of a mythical creature... I hope you come back to contribute. Of course, if not, I understand.

The troll was accused of being an Internet troll and not a mythical creature so he gave up and went home to his dark hole, never to be seen again. The End.

Oh, perfect ending to the story. I hope someone starts another story for us! I always find this a fun type of game. I must say our story has been by far the most original turn of events to end a story in this thread!

The thing is, with the Internet, nicknames are absolutely nothing compared to real names, which carry consequences. This is one of the few forums that require you to sign up with your real name, therefore members of this forum are more civilized, not wanting to stain their name.

However, most forums can simply let someone create a nickname as stupid as "DonutZ90". Under the guise of that nickname, someone can easily spread insults and wrongdoings around the Internet. Nicknames act as a mask on the Internet, and as Oscar Wilde said, "Give a man a mask and he will show his true face."

This is especially the case of 4chan, a really toxic corner of the Internet, full of "trolls". They started several hoaxes, even tricking young girls to shave their heads for Justin Bieber. In many cases, trolling is nothing more than mild cyberbullying, but in some cases it can take quite extreme turns.

However, I fail to see what an Internet troll has to do with scaring you out of a story involving a fantasy troll, creatures that are don't have anything in common except for their name. I'm really not trying to pick up a fight here, I just don't follow the logic.

I was thinking of the troll who lived under the bridge in The Three Billy Goats Gruff. Sorry, I don't know much about internet trolls.

Internet trolling is not gender related. If anything, I would suspect that the majority of them are males. I don't think that's happening here, and I hope that it does not.

(Scratching head), I'm not sure what just happened. I came back to the story, and it seems to have been hi-jacked by troll-haters. LOL Personally, I always loved the under-the-bridge variety of troll. They made stories of my childhood so much more interesting. Siiiigh! Yet another great word has been hi-jacked, and now we can't enjoy it in it's original form anymore.

John, it seems you are challenging me for a reply, so it is only fair that I explain the situation, then we can let it rest as there is another thread started by a member for a new story line.

John, for 10 years, I have been harassed, bullied, and hurt very badly on internet forums by a small group of internet gals who have not liked me for a number of reasons. My life got unbearable and it was very abusive. I had to leave the internet as they seem to find me where ever I went. They would recognize me no matter what my nick name was, and they would either call me a troll or insinuate it into the thread so I would know they are on my trail again. If you have never been bullied on the internet, you would never know how devastating this can be. I have always been a heavy poster and belonged to many forums. I have never wanted trouble, but sometimes they pop up, and AGAIN trouble is started.

This forum does not "require" us to use our real name. Allison Schuck is not my real name. I used my real name on a forum once and the bullying moved to my outside life and believe me "there were consequences". You don't know who you are talking to on the internet, don't even know if they are male, female, sex trade workers, child molesters, rapists, murderers, or simply annoying stalkers. Thank GOD we can use nick names. I had to go so far as to relocate to a new city after using my real name. The police were involved and it was just terrible. That is all I wish to say about it. Hoping that you can see both sides of the coin. When it started on the net to use a nick name, it was the smartest advice ever given. Otherwise; you are putting yourself in harm's way.

Just for the record, I didn't get "scared" out of the thread, I opted out for my own well-being and peace of mind. On the internet, we don't usually talk the talk of long ago, we talk the talk of the internet, no one I know has even heard of the troll you are referring to (not saying it is not true that there was a story long ago). I use internet lingo while on here and most of my friends do the same. That is why we have to learn it, so there won't be misunderstands. The internet has a language of it's own.

Now, I am not accusing anyone on this forum of harassing and stalking me. That is not anyone's business except my own. If I am not comfortable here, I know I can leave. I have a choice as to whether I want to stay on a thread or not.

Hope this satisfies your curiosity as it will be the last time I post on this subject. Thank you.
