I think Bob Dylan chooses not to sing the way most would consider well. It's his trademark. Have you ever heard him sing Pretty Saro? That is a cover, btw, so I'm back on topic.
Just one more: When my dad heard Little Richard, he said "He gets paid for that?" Uh yeah dad, pretty well. Actually, Richard didn't sound bad on some ballads:
Twist and Shout - The Top Notes - (original, 1961) Cover by the Isley Brothers became a hit in 1962. I still prefer the Beatles (1964).
It's interesting that we bond with the one we know, even if we later discover that it's a cover. Someone else posted Tennessee Ernie Ford, and as I was reading about him, I found out that someone else wrote and sang "16 Tons." Ernie's version was a cover.
From 1974, but in The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, 1982. And I love Dolly, but I totally disagree with @Trevalius Guyus . Whitney owns this song.
#1: I'll listen to the Wilson sisters all...night...long. #2: I can only imagine those guys mentally juxtaposing the drug-infested session which created that song against the sea of tuxedos and singers in that venue before them.
Cyndi Lauper has grown on me over the years. I also like Joan Jett. And Pat Benatar. Cyndi has written and sung some real nice tunes, while the latter 2 are pure hard-chargin' rockin' women.
