When I was little and lived in South Carolina my friend's mother would spank her when she said "darn it" because she said she was cursing/cussing. I never understood that. My Mother, when "fed up to her eyeballs" would say s--t and then of course we her children would repeat the word she said and get our mouth's washed out with soap for saying that same word. I never understood that either. But when I started raising my own children and found myself following in the footsteps of my Mother when I was fed up to my eyeballs...then I understood things alot better.
Since we only spoke Hungarian at home growing up, there were no swear words spoken in my house. My parents didn't swear in Hungarian either, although if they did I wouldn't have known it at the time. When I met my husband I had him tell me all the Hungarian swear words. The ones in English pale by comparison, lol.
Actually Ken, she was asking people to stop, as in “please respect my God and my Faith”. She wanted people to stop disrespecting her God and Faith, but not everyone feels the way she does. I do, She also stated how much it hurt her to read some of the replies and didn’t think, when she joined the forum, that anyone would talk like a few have. Thing is, when a Thread is done on discussing swearing/cussing EVERYONE has to be ready for “the good, the bad and the ugly” for replies. There are other topics the same way. I done one, either in this forum or the other one, about how much wife and I loved the circus and rodeo. A lot of replies were like “Get a rope. Time for a hanging”! Talk about being slapped around, wow! Heck, I remember calling out a member who had said “the Lords name in vain” and telling him I didn’t join this forum to read words like that. He said he was sorry, but also said that that’s the way he talks. I darn near left the forum for good after reading that. He apologized, but, in essence said that it was up to him the words he used in a reply.
Along the lines of 'cussing', seems I have always been told what might offend someone and as I traveled, it got even harder not to offend. Every foriegn countries I worked in had their own slang that was considered 'cussing'. Some I enjoyed using, simply because of the sound of the word. Fun to say. It seems that most of the words and phrases I remember of a language are slang terms and or how to order a beer. My biggest problem came from gestures. I 'talk' with my hands alot and that can get you in trouble in some Middle Eastern countries...
I can remember when my Mom's Mom would call and they would talk in French because that was the language they grew up with. I think basically the only French I later in life learned were curse words although I can't remember what those words are now. (my Mom did not teach me any) In High School I studied Spanish because I thought it sounded so romantic and I know my teacher did not teach us to cuss in Spanish...but somehow I learned those words too. I don't use them anymore but when we lived in Jacksonville and the Mexicans would say them...I definitely knew when they were cussing. They made it themselves...the best they could.
Very few Mexicans here now. Most work for landscape companys and at Mexican restaurants. I learned my Spanish (good and bad words) working for companies in Santa Ana, California.
We were never allowed (never tried, actually) to cuss at home, when I was a kid; and that included the more family friendly derivatives, like darn, jeez, etc.
Most of the ones that lived in our complex were very nice and I enjoyed meeting them and swapping some cajun recipes for some Mexican ones. It was the guys that I would hear speaking a few curse words when they had one to many of their Coronas and they weren't ugly about it...basically they said those curse words just like they said the rest of their words. I think maybe when you grow up with those kinds of words being a normal part of your life, you don't know they can be offensive until someone lets you know or looks at you strangely.
Yes, my older brother explained it to me. "Gee" was a shortened version of "Jesus," and used in much the same way that others might use "Jesus Christ," as a way of taking His name in vain. I never tried any of them on my mom, so I don't know what she'd have thought of it.
Gosh...I really can't say that anymore than even if I know I did not mean it that way at all. Is Gosh a cuss word too? I might just have to stop talking all together to make sure I have not been cussing.
I wonder who was the first person to decide that the F word was to become an offensive swear word. If you think about it...any one of us could start a new cuss word... start looking appalled when someone says a nonsense word like.. say... '' bahoosh'' for example, and before you know it, everyone will be going around saying it..and the next generation will believe it's swear word...
