I am a die hard Mets fan and have been since their inception. I was absolutely devastated to arrive home from France to find my beloved Dodgers had stars in their eyes and sought celebrity status in Hollywood. So out of character for "Dem Bums" from Brooklyn. Many of the players eventually found there way back to us fans.
Your Mets upset my Birds in the '69 WS. Our hometown boy Ron Swoboda was one of your outfielders. He played third base around the sandlot leagues in Baltimore.
My first baseball game was in 1957 at Yankee Stadium where my grandpa took me. he was a big Yankees fan, but i started to watch the Dodgers in Brooklyn, where Ilived. I have been a Mets fan since 1962, saw them play in the Polo Grounds twice, and then went to the first two games in Shea Stadium in 1964. I once met Gil Hodges' daughter at a baseball card show.
I was born in Baltimore so I had mixed feelings that year. I loved watching Ron Swoboda and his enthusiasm. Great catch that day!
I was born in California (left at 13) and...I did and I believe it was the Los Angeles Dodgers when Bench and Rose were playing Teams have moved and changed so much, I honestly can't/don't keep track anymore. Baseball used to be my favorite, until I was watching a game, years ago, where I thought it was thrown. Didn't watch it again after that... Never have made it to a major league game, of any sort, though.
I don't blame people for wanting some kind of enjoyment and release from everyday things. I know my son,son in laws still love their sports and Nascar. A little history on Nascar it was founded in N.Georgia by moonshine runners they needed fast cars to outrun the revenue men.
