One thing that frightens me about electric cars is a wildfire. They routinely cut the power to areas affected by the fires, but if you have only electric vehicles, you won't be able to charge your car and won't be able to escape the fire. The same could be said for other disasters, but fire is the most obvious to me. I recall a fire we had here. All the emergency response was changed to cell phones. The fires went through and destroyed the towers and the firefighters were unable to communicate with each other, as were the medics and police. they put out an emergency call for Ham radio folks and they saved the day. Everybody is back on radios now with cell phones as a backup.
All the politicians have to do is make life there so unlivable that the masses will flee, freeing up real estate and driving down its value. When their buddies scoop it up and move in, these mandates will be "revisited."
That also is a concern for me, with another concern to me being they are quiet so this creates a problem for pedestrians. Electric cars have way to many concerns to be of any significance. Ham radio operators in remote areas are still an asset in some emergencies. I keep my license current but don't have reason to have a rig since I live close to emergency services and they have an all-band setup there but only operators with tech licenses.
The push to replace gasoline-powered motor vehicles with electric cars makes as much sense as the 1980s push to replace paper bags with plastic in order to save trees.
I remember when those were pushed because they are "photo-degradable." At first I envisioned them all staked out on the ground for hundreds of years until they vanished (not really.) Then I realized they would be buried in landfills, and it's all a pile of crap.
The latest danger in Florida from Hurricane Ian comes in the form of flooded EVs and their corroded lithium batteries, which eventually catch fire. Link to Twitter video. The smoke is highly toxic, and the fire is nearly impossible to extinguish.
Wyoming wants to phase out sales of new EVs by 2035 It's a symbolic gesture aimed at states like California. While jurisdictions like California and New York move toward banning the sale of new gasoline-powered cars, one US state wants to go in the opposite direction. Wyoming’s legislature is considering a resolution that calls for a phaseout of new electric vehicle sales by 2035. Introduced on Friday, Senate Joint Resolution 4 has support from members of the state’s House of Representatives and Senate.
I was just watching a video from Toyota about their "revolutionary" new hydrogen engine. The CEO claims it will make EVs obsolete. I'll just keep driving my dinosaur.
