Oh, I hope your brother-in-law is doing better! My mother has cancer. It is indeed a journey. To have the additional burden of medical bills makes it even more of one. I wish you a successful Labor Day yard sale.

Good suggestions on where to place ads. Nowadays, posting online on various sites also attracts the public. I know this becasue my daughter is always finding a bunch for us to go to on a regular basis. Personally, I always get a thrill, when I simply see a sign on the side of the road.

Thank you for the idea to use the computer to get more of an audience and thank you for your kind words about my brother-in-law. I hope every thing works out for your mother with her cancer. Thanks for sharing that with me.

@Linda Schrier If you're on Facebook, make sure you post in the local sales groups about the garage sale, give them a couple of weeks notice, since it's on a holiday weekend, and if you haven't considered it already, you might want to think about creating one of those donation pages for his bills. I don't remember what the names of the sites are, but you can do an internet search if no one chimes in here with them. I think there's gofundme or something like that, and a lot of people use them for medical bills, as well as other things, such as unexpected funeral expenses, etc. I hope your BIL is doing well with the treatment. Cancer is a horrible disease, and I hope his treatment does the trick, and he is cured.

I had forgotten, we were at the house with a tree canopy, so didn't even have to set up the canvas one. It was a very quiet sale, not much business, and I didn't make a lot of money, but I did get to spend some time with friends, and made about $20. I think the next one is here at my place, so we'll see how that goes. I'm surprised we didn't do better at this one, because in addition to all of our smaller items, a friend was selling 2 jet skis on a trailer, a big truck, and a Mustang. Last time I made the most, this time I made the least, but we probably made about $250 all together, so overall, it was a success.

@Linda Schrier Hi Linda, So glad to hear he's been cured. It would be difficult to find anyone these days who hasn't been affected by Cancer in one way or another. Thanks, my Mom is doing ok, her dizziness has passed, and I told her to make a note of that and the loss of appetite, to discuss with her doctor on her next appointment.

Since garage sales are getting common here, we tried it some years ago. First, we made a list of what to sell - old things that are not being used plus some which are not running anymore. We had a long list, from a broken tv set down to old shoes. Since our intention was not to earn profit, we prepared pasta and pastries and treated customers as guests.

The buyers, mostly neighbors who know us, enjoyed the food and the ambience of our garage which looked like a small warehouse. Most of the goods on sale were bought. Even the broken tv was bought (the buyer was happy to report that it was repaired for a minimal cost). Our first garage sale was a huge success in terms of attendance and appreciation. Just don't ask about the sales.

Haha @Corie Henson Many people don't make much money on this type of sales. My neighbors that I conduct the sales jointly with usually put ridiculously low prices on their items, because they don't need the money, and are more trying to clean out their houses of old items, so they can go out and buy new ones to replace them. I'm the one who is always looking to make money, and my items are usually different than theirs, because I sell some of the items online, and figure I'll see how they do at the sales. However, one of the neighbors had about 5 vehicles in the last sale, so she did make some money. That was nice of y'all to offer them refreshments. Here in my neighborhood, many would expect any beverage to be alcoholic, so we skipped the food and drinks.

@Diane Lane, that is also my intention with that garage sale I had years ago - to clear out our stock room. So far, that's the only one and we have yet to hold a part 2 of that garage sale. And I also agree that it's not for the money but more for the fun of it. That event was like a gathering of neighbors. We were chatting almost the whole day because there were chairs and tables and food and drinks, so what more do you need? And when someone would ask for a discount, there is no hesitation on our part.

Garage sales are common in our village. I see posters once in while about garage sales during weekends. However, I don't have the penchant to buy used items, hahahaaa.

I don't have a problem buying used, especially if it's something I need, and can't afford to buy it new, such as with electronics, or appliances. I've bought some nice pieces of furniture used as well, and had no idea how difficult it was to sell used furniture. I think times have changed, and most people nowadays seem to prefer buying everything new, so sometimes it's difficult to unload our possessions without donating them.

:oops:While I ride the bus and walking to catch the bus I see from time to time yard sales signs with addresses and arrows pointing the way to the yard sale. I don't have time to go to yard sales though and it's too bad for me that I can't go to the sale. Have you watched American Pickers? You just don't know if you got something they want to buy.:) Good luck!

Back when I was still happily married, wifey and I would hit the yard sales and household auctions every summer weekend. At times, most of our house was furnished with yard sale or auction items. Those were fun times.

We are having a Community Garage Sale this coming Saturday. It's just for our apartment complex and residents can either sell stuff inside their enclosed garage or on card tables outside/in front of it. We will do it on card tables outside/in front. It will only last 3 hours, but apartment management is handling the advertising for it. After my wife retires, we are moving back to Colorado, so we will sell all of our new saltwater fishing gear (that we never used) and some other things we don't want to ship to Colorado. If the fishing stuff doesn't sell at the Garage Sale, I will put the stuff on Craigslist.

When we lived in Colorado before, we were involved with a Community Garage Sale a few times in a housing development old house was in. A Real Estate Agent, living in the developement, provided free advertising for those. We don't alright selling some stuff, but done better putting stuff on Craigslist and selling that way. What we didn't sell, we took to both Goodwill and Salvation Army.
