I've never tried Amazon Photos, and was only vaguely aware that it existed.

I just don’t think that it makes any difference what I do. If the government wants access to anything on any of my devices, they can probably easily get it, unless I had a device (think dinosaur computer) that never went online at all.
If it makes you feel safer to not use the cloud, then that is what works for you. For me, every time my old computer broke and died, i lost all of my photos and everything else that was on there, for ever and ever.
Now that i have it on the cloud, I can use it with any device that i have and not lose it, unless the whole internet gets bombed and dies; so I feel better this way.

When I had kindles, I wanted to be able to put on new wallpaper from my own photos instead of the things that Amazon put on the Kindles. I had to use Amazon photos so the pictures would be on my kindles, and then i could use them for my wallpaper, like I do with my ipad and phone.
It is free with your amazon prime account, and should automatically upload from your new iphone once you have the app on the phone. Then you just delete whatever you do not want to save.

I completely get the passive, guaranteed file backup.

I am thinking to just get a flip phone for emergencies and put my 'smart' phone in a faraday cage.

Can you still get Throw Away phones, or has that been squelched? I see shows where someone pays cash for one, but the transaction for that phone is traced back to security cameras.

Well, my smart phone is a tracfone and only cost $29. But the battery can't be removed. Bad for the environment.
Yes, I could use a rock. But I may want it for something sometime.

I had the same "non-replaceable battery" issue with my last Droid. You could do it...with a heat gun and the proper adhesive.

My wife has had an iPhone longer than I have, and we both use Apple products almost exclusively; again, her more so than me because she uses an iPad rather than a Kindle. However, she recently upgraded to the newest iPhone and hates it. She complains that the AI is so persistent that it takes it upon itself to change her settings, and it's hard to get things back where she wants them. She's talking about switching to one of the Android flip phones since they have smartphones in a flip phone style now. Although I'm not having trouble with my iPhone 14 Pro, that sounds like a good idea. A flip phone would be more practical since I could fold it up and put it in my pocket. Are any of you using the most recent iPhone?

No, I’m waiting for Musk to put his out.
I know I won’t be able to afford one but I’ll be able to look at the picture of it a lot.

My current IPhone is an 11 and it's time to update but I'm going back and forth on a decision. I'm currently thinking maybe the iPhone 15. I've also considered a basic flip phone only for making phone calls. I'm not sure how much that's going to help though because iPads and laptops will have AI too. I may end up waiting until my phone dies at the rate I'm going making this decision.

Apple Intelligence will be available in beta on all iPhone 16 models, iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPad and Mac with M1 and later, with Siri and device language set to U.S. English, as part of an iOS 18, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia update this fall.

I've thought of switching to Android but they also have or will have a version of AI and their security is not known for being as good as Apple.

I have heard there is a lot of dissatisfaction with IOS 18 and I haven't upgraded to it on any device.

I don't mind having AI available, but I don't want to have to depend on it.

So is AI forced on you in these newer models? (Can you disable/enable it?)

That's really the question. There are some settings that can be disabled but who knows how much access others may have. There are long forum threads with people saying they don't want this. AI is 3rd in a list of features people want the new iPhone for.

Smart phones already have artificial intelligence and have had for a long time but it had less functions. Siri is artificial intelligence. Alexa is as well. I think some (me, included) are just waking up to what could be done with AI. I use my phone for less than most people do. I tend to access sensitive sites on my desktop. Sure, the desktop could be hacked or stolen but I don't want sensitive info on a phone that leaves the house with me every time I go somewhere. And now I'm starting to think maybe I don't want anything on such a device.

It's not on every new phone or so they say. I guess I have a trust issue.

Thanks for your question, John. Questions make me think or look for answers.
