It looks like you are in the “pause” between storms right now, at least on my radar. Showing a massive snow front headed towards Richmond area, so thinking that includes you ?

Oh, OK. I was thinking that if your power went out, you'd have water in the bathtub to use to flush the toilet. :D Also pots of water to use for coffee or cooking. Our power goes out regularly but it doesn't affect our water supply like people with a well pump.

That is what we always did when I lived in Idaho and had the bad blizzards and power outages. At least John has a wood stove, so he can bring in snow and melt it for basic water needs, assuming he gets snow and not just an ice storm.
With well water, it definitely is going to stop the well if power goes out, unlike city water which usually still worked, even with power outages.

We are now under a winter storm warning here in Alabama, and the wind is ferocious out there ! Little ice flecks on the front porch ramp, but not actual snow.

I am here, about 60 miles NW of downtown Richmond and 20 miles from Charlottesville
    [IMG]

We're supposed to get another 2.5" of mainly snow (and some rain) starting at 4PM then ending at 9PM, give or take. My gauges have been hovering around 35°F, and you can hear the stuff melting off of the trees. I knocked the snow off of my Mazda and my truck and walked up the right-of-way to see if there were fallen trees that needed to be dealt with:

No trees down heading towards the hard surface road
    [IMG]

No trees down headed back to the compound...
...but it looks like I'm being followed!!!

I don't think that extra 2.5" is gonna do much tree damage but it might make travel dicey. Every year my neighbors and I clear back the overhanging stuff that looks like it might be a risk in a storm, although we don't cut down the larger trees. (It's the pine trees that get heavy & then uproot.) The only danger might be ice on the back roads (meaning pretty much my entire county) because this stuff is melting, then we're gonna get more snow & rain, then it's gonna get down to 19°F tonight...likely colder in many spots. Tomorrow will approach 40°F and then down to below 12°F.

@Beth Gallagher It's warmer at my place than it is at yours. :p

Good luck to all of you suffering from the current storm. It is actually warming here--we are up near freezing--but we are under some kind of weather advisory or warning. We have to go to a garden club meeting this morning since my wife is the president, but it will be home after that to await developments.

Garden Club, :) funny how we don't think of gardening in Alaska, although it exists, plus I like the advice you give us sometimes. Lately you seem to get more from it than we do here.

Gardening here is short-season but intense.

For the curious, here's a map of the nothing-burger that came through:

I swear the Egg, Bread & Milk Lobby is high-fiving itself behind the scenes. THEY are the ones pulling the strings on the hysteria.

We lost our Internet service during the night and just gotten it back up. For how long, I don’t know. Some bridges and roads were shut down yesterday and today, due to power lines and trees down, plus accidents.

The temp is 24 with north winds at 15-25mph. We had thunder and lightning off and on yesterday and through the night with freezing rain. Trees are heavy with ice with limbs breaking off. We have about 3 pick-up truck loads of limbs that will need to be cleaned up just in our yard from our trees that have broken off. We have one big pin oak tree close to our house that was dropping limbs on top of the roof last night. I was afraid one would come through but it did not. It sounded terrible falling. The Mr. checked it out today and no damage was done.

Thankfully, our house did not lose power for any significantly amount of time. The power went off and on 4 or 5 times yesterday and 3 times this morning but there was no need to get the generator out yet….”knock” Unfortunately, all the houses across from us and behind us lost power early yesterday evening and have not had it restored yet. They are on a different power service company. (Those houses were built later on than ours). There are only a dozen or so of us out here that are on Ameren Electric and we are holding on. Whew! It is going to get much colder and down to single digits for the rest of the week. Hopefully the sun will decide to make an appearance during the cold days ahead, and that will help things a lot. :)

I'm sure Jim Cantore is hanging onto a traffic sign somewhere in middle America.

32 F here with daily overcast and rain for last two months. Not unusual to get rain here in the Northwest, but daily, and lots of it, is record breaking.

Well, they said the snow was gonna start in the late afternoon...they were right. My car got covered up pretty quickly and it's still coming down. Although I did not get but about 2" last night, I'm reading of pockets of 5"...and we got a few inches more coming tonight.

    It must be winter.
