I took a quick look at the grill and the whole unit is torn from the base and the propane supply tube seems to be bent. Frankly, it worked real well in the summer but struggled to get hot in the winter (a Char Broil [supposed] infra-red unit.) I'll start looking for a replacement. I have a firewood rack in my living room. I built it out of reclaimed fence posts. It goes almost all the way to the ceiling and is 2' wide...it holds quite a bit. I also have 12' of racks on my front porch. If I only used my stove for the occasional treat I wouldn't do this, but it's my main source of heat. Right now it's 13° out with a windchill of -3°, and my living room is a toasty 73°.
you got it goin on!...we use wood when temps are not likely to freeze water lines...we been burning since October...since this siberian whatever?...-31 this am...furnace on.. wind's been 40 mph...insane!...keep warm and hopefully this will be gone ...not soon enough!
My waterlines here used to be fine because they were about 5' in from the exterior wall. Then I installed a water softener, and it sits in the corner of the house. So the supply line runs a good distance parallel to (and near) one exterior wall, and it comes up into the house at the intersection of 2 exterior walls. I've had it nearly freeze once in the past 8 years when the [topic]weather[/topic] got cold like this. I've yet to go back in the crawlspace and put the foam sleeves I bought on it...I just let a faucet slowly run all night.
we had to put in a big softener too..all that's connected here inside...crammed it in a closet...my husband set it all up ..plumbed it and amazing ... we sold house in NC to move close to our daughter...central Illinois.. got a new single mobile home...it's only room for us...so he comes up with the where can i put this plans...although there's heat tape on underneath where it comes in...if no power...water has to be cut off...drained..i guess.. i have been fearful for all during this dangerous cold...you be warm and long as we can stack wood...and do necessary things.. be ok

Powers has been out for much of the day. We lit the woodstove and are pretty cozy, but I broke down and started the generator before if gets dark. A friend found a tree down on our road, but he managed to push it off the road. I walked the driveway to make sure no trees were down over the driveway, and there were LOTS of branches and limbs, but no large trees...yet. I don't have the heated bowls and lamps in the chicken pen on emergency power, so I hope they are okay. I checked on them and they are getting some frostbitten combs, but otherwise seem healthy. Wind has drifted everything in now and the swing on the covered porch got blown over but the grill is fine. We were afraid something would get blown through the large picture window, but, thankfully, that didn't happen. Temp is sitting at -8 F. but the wind is really tearing. No idea what the windchill is, but it looks like a wine and cheese in front of the fire night.
We had barn cats here for almost 30 years. They didn't come in the house, but had a snug place under the shed where they usually stayed. I rigged up a large Styrofoam cooler with a door and a nightlight bulb to keep it warm in the coldest weather, but they seemed to enjoy snuggling under the shed most of the time.
We are getting our January thaw next week. It goes from below zero with 24 mile an hour winds to 40 above! Not a good plan.
Most of my emergency chinking got blown apart. I put it back and it was done again. I hope the chickens bed down on the ground instead of up on the stalls. I built them an emergency shelter A lot of the emergency chinking we put in blew in twice. I built an emergency windbreak shelter in the barn but the chickies have paid it no mind. I sure hope they spend the night on the ground in a stall or they may get blown off their roosts in the dark. they were all still in decent shape today. I bring hot water in for everyone a few times a day. But tonite will be the worst.
i saw those diy cat shelters...our daughter and son in law got rid of their sleep #bed .. it had strong hollow plastic frame..we made A frame shelter..cedar bedding...covered again with pallets..A frame to extend for food..that's stapled with black plastic...a rug on cedar...2 pet beds...150 watt bulb.. with shield over their beds...not a heat bulb.. closed ends with more bed frame..left 2 small openings..used bucked stumps to hold those from wind...whatta job...we love critters!
Got down to 5.9°F (-14.5°C) overnight. At 9AM it was still only 8°F (-13°C) with a wind chill of -6°F (-21°C). Tonight & tomorrow night are both gonna be around 12°F (-11°C), then we'll be in the 50s/60s (10°C-15°C) by the end of the week. I have an old shed that has a chicken coop bump-out on the back. There were a couple of feral cats (and ground hogs) living in it when I moved in, but they disappeared after a couple of years. I assume all the wild creatures know what to do in this weather, the poor buggers.
