I would be looking for a seedling from it to transplant. But it wouldn't grow here if it's a Douglas Fir. :(

I was thinking the same thing. I've made fire starters from my local pine cones, and recall the ones from Michigan, and none of them looked like that. Those look like the pine cones you see Cuckoo Clock weights fashioned after (Black Forest pines?)

Pine tree cones usually grow downwards (left picture) whereas those of fir trees (right picture) grow upwards

I've seen photos of a Korean Pine that look like this with the vertical bluish pine cones.

No nice pine trees left down here much now that the pone beetle was found. They told us to cut down our pines or face paying $10,000 a tree if they found a beetle in one of them. So we sold them all. I miss our little pine forest we had. Only oaks, bays and cedars now a few other kinds but mostly oaks .

I walked into the bathroom at about 7:45PM tonight, looked out the window, and sitting right there in the tree is one of the owls! They've been gone since September. I've heard them every once in the while during the winter off in the distance, but still in the neighborhood. It makes me happy to know they may be back around this spring & summer.

I wonder if there will be another crop of owlets. Barred owls reach sexual maturity at age 2, so the young uns I saw last year won't be making babies just yet. Apparently, the larger owl species like the barred owl reach sexual maturity at age 2, while most other owl species are ready to breed after one year.

This puts a smile on my face. I thought they may be one-and done, but perhaps they've established a permanent presence.

That's good to hear. We have Great Horned Owls around here. I'm not familiar with any of the smaller ones.

Chickens do not have toes, silly woman. Still, sometimes their feet get fowl.

I was out working in the yard a couple of weeks ago and there were 4-5 circling overhead...I rarely see more than 3 at once (this time of year there are territorial disputes...both property lines and who-gets-the-female stuff.) Then a few flew in from behind me, and others flew in from a different direction. Next thing I knew I counted at least 10 hawks just circling overhead as turkey vultures do. I've never seen anything like it. Other folks around here tell me that there's a bumper crop this year. I guess that's a good sign that there's a flourishing food chain.

We have a good population of goshawks and bald eagles around here - both magnificent birds.

Claw has one more letter than toe, so it's better. Using longer words makes a person sound mor intelligrent.
