I can't see how they do it! I'm totally uncoordinated when I try to throw a ball or swing a bat with my left hand. I don't know how the name "southpaw" came into being either...it seems they should be called "westpaws", because when you're facing away, the head is North, the feet are South, and the left and right hands are West and East respectively. See ya... H.P.
According to Merriam-Webster, it may have come from the one-time position of ballparks in relation to the sun. Supposedly, late 19th-century ballparks were laid out so that the pitcher looked in a westerly direction while facing the batter. However, the original use of the word didn’t involve baseball at all but was a reference to a punch given with the left hand.
