Ass far as we know, he was not a career criminal outside drugs. I was lead to think by the Trooper that he was heavily involved in the drug business, for both his own use and supplying others, but other than that, I don't believe he was violent. Otherwise I would not have confronted him unarmed. (My wife, however, was armed and standing behind me.)
Except for the mentally ill or those high on drugs, Knowing your criminal acts can land you in the hospital or dead, Is a pretty persuasive method to respect your neighbors and the law. I am not a violent person. I don't go looking for trouble, but if my family is threatened, I will do whatever it takes to protect them.
You faced off with the intruder unarmed, but your armed wife was behind you. That sounds like my moderately brave half. Sometimes I wonder who is more afraid of the armed woman, the husband or the intruder.
So many on drugs and involved in crime now. What happened to our once relatively safe culture? Of course, I guess the days of Al Capone, Machine Gun Kelly, etc, etc, etc wasn't too safe either. Up north has always had gangs, south had violent groups too.
My wife was worried about me confronting him unarmed, but I didn't feel threatened by him physically. I have dealt with druggies and drunks in the past and they seem to always back down when confronted. That doesn't mean they aren't dangerous though. It was concerning that he was not leaving however, and that the police did not seem able to keep him hanging around and peeking in windows, not only at my house but also at other places in the area. I just thought that not many in this area would tolerate his behavior, and that is why I posted that he might not survive the night. I was right on that score. The Troopers put out a press release that stated, "He was shot by a homeowner after reports of several attempted break-ins in the area."
Yeah, the guy who shot him claimed that he was changed in something of a drugged rage. That can certainly happen, but I tried to keep something between him and me so that didn't happen, but I was open to attack when he was found on the deck outside the window. He didn't attack then though (thankfully) and I am glad I was not the one who had to shoot him to protect our home and family.
