Nepal is reporting that they have at least 700 people who have died, and many more are still trapped in the rubble, and have not been found. The quake shook Mt. Everest and created avalanches on the mountain. The first aftershock was about an hour later, and it was 6.6; so a very large earthquake as well, and other aftershocks of a lesser magnitude have been occurring. This is already a very poor country, and now many of the houses and other buildings have been ruined; so it will be hard for them to rebuild after this devestation. http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/strong-earthquake-felt-nepals-capital-30576522
This is a horrible and horrendous event. There was talk of an actual exhibition of climbers who were climbing Mount Everest at the time the quake hit some of them including a Google executive didn't make it off the mountain alive. In fact, rescue and recovery efforts are still continuing on this mountain. Also, there was a report today of a man found in the rubble alive after being buried in the rubble for four days. So, the rescue efforts continue throughoout Nepal, and from the looks of the damage done this whole thing could take awhile.
I just watched an interesting video that talks about the recent Nepal earthquake, and also the underwater volcano that is currently erupting off of the shore of Oregon. The last time this undersea volcano erupted was in 2011, when we also had a very large earthquake . The video explains the links between earthquakes and volcanoes, and how they affect the movements of the earth. He also looks at where the next earthquakes are apt to occur, based on where the last quakes and eruptions were located and how severe they were.
