Since you have a WiFi modem, there is no reason (that I can see) why you can’t keep the old computer in operation while you are setting up your new iMac .
We have 3 iPads, (each), and one iMac computer running, and for a little while, also the MacBook laptop. And of course, both have watches and phones, plus the smart TV.
So there should be no problem having 2 computers running on your modem at the same time, and that way , you can still be online while transferring the pictures and other files.

It would be easier for Kim Jong Un to become appointed to the US Supreme Court than to understand Apple's instructions for setting up a Mac Computer!

This iMAC is the most complicated device I ever tried to set up!

I'm packing up that box of worms for return tomorrow!

WINDOWS 7 FOREVER or until it's dissolved by the PC Industry.

There are some nuances to an IMac but do tell me, is it the plugging it in or the pushing the button that’s throwin’ ya? :) Aren’t engineers supposed to be a little more patient about learning about new gadgets?

Maybe you can follow Yvonne’s advice and keep the other computer running and get some instructions from YouTube.

Didn’t you say that you got the new computer from Best Buy ? They have the Geek Squad, who will come to your home and set everything up for you.
Before you give up completely on having a nice new computer, you might want to try asking Best Buy about sending out the Geek Squad for you.
I have a friend that does that whenever she needs something done with her computer.

Did someone say @Hal Pollner was stubborn? :D

All I did to my HP was plug it in and connect the cords. It did the rest. If I can do it, surely Hal can.:rolleyes:

Is that computer #4 bought/returned to Best Buy? They are going to ban you from shopping there, @Hal Pollner . :p

I was thinking about that, too ! They might be happy to send their team out to set up the iMac, so they don’t have to keep doing all that paperwork.

Yes, this is the 4th Computer I'm returning to Best Buy. The first three were Window 10, and the 4th is a Mac. If they want to ban me from shopping there, then let 'em!

I've learned over the past few years that my Hewlett-Packard Windows Seven machine is the best, most comfortable, most forgiving Computer I've ever used. If I paid Best Buy's Geek Squad to install the Mac for me, I'll still have a computer that I don't like as much as my dear old W7!

I was able to go on the Seniors Only forum with the Mac, but I didn't like the experience. It just wasn't as "friendly" as my W7!

Yes, I was a Lab Test Engineer for many years at McDonnell-Douglas and Boeing, and now I'm almost 83, and am trying to ignore Alzheimers without success.

I've built several large, impressive scientific hobby projects, mostly in the High Voltage Electrostatics field, but I can't do that anymore. My hands shake too much.

I now have reached a chapter in my life where I need everything to go as easy as possible, such as not staying on my treadmill for more than 3 minutes at walking speed and maximum elevation, but you may not understand, my peppy little 60 and 70-year-olds!

Shirley is using that tired old saying "If I can do it, anyone can do it!" That saying should be more realistically stated: "If I can do it, that's not necessarily a sign that anybody else can do it!"

Bobby, my patience is limited. It's just that the INSTRUCTIONS are mostly foreign to me. My engineering veneer has peeled off over the last 21 years since I had that title.

Bess, there is nobody around who can help me unless I use the services of Best Buy's Geek Squad. Creating the sign-in is what confuses me...Apple wants me to come up with new Email Addresses, new User Names, and new Passwords. When I do, they say those cannot be used for various reasons. This makes me mad as Hell!

They’ll make you type in your password twice and if one doesn’t match the other, it won’t be accepted.
An Icloud email address is simple. You do not have to have one, but it helps out a lot.

It really isn’t that complicated Hal but you may be making it more complicated by getting frustrated or in too much of a hurry or both. Take it easy and just do as you are prompted to do then everything will be peachy keen.

By the bye. I get frustrated too at times and want to reach into the computer monitor and try to strangle someone but that’s with any OS I have ever worked with. KISS.....keep it simple saint.

Setting up a Mac involves plugging it in and pressing the "on" button. Learning what to do with it after you started it up is another thing, but most everything is pretty straightforward. If you want to open an application, you click on it. Most Mac applications are easy enough to figure out. Becoming a power user requires some trial and error, but there is usually an easy way to pretty much everything. I still don't use some of the shortcuts that are available, and my wife tells me I am doing some things the long way. But it works for me, and I know how to do it, so that's shorter than learning to do something I don't know how to do.

Getting online with it requires, of course, that you be connected to your Internet service, which means knowing the password and so on, but that would be true with any computer. After that, you simply click on the Safari icon and there you go. Safari works like pretty much any other browser, so that shouldn't give you a problem.

The only thing that I have found to be unnecessarily cumbersome is the Mac Mail application. After getting all of my emails set up and working, the next time I click on it, invariably it tells me that the password is wrong on at least one of them, although I hadn't changed it. I haven't even tried to use the Mac Mail app in several years, and most people I know who have a Mac don't use it. I just retrieve my mail through webmail. I think it's safer that way, anyhow. If there are viruses in any of the emails, they aren't on my computer unless I click it.

I will no longer discuss Computer installation. I'm typing on my HP W7 device right now, and no other computer has ever pleased me as much!

Now...shall we move on to Early Rennaissance Sculpting?

Hal....you need to at least upgrade to windows 10 !! Windows 7 will become obselete very soon, and although you can still go on using 7 there will be no patches or updates for it. I have a MAC desktop at home and an Ipad and Iphone, but I have this 8 year old laptop on Windows 10......the laptop itself is in mint condition so I will continue to use it when I'm on vacation as I am now in Southern Spain ...and also much as Microsoft is a PITA it's handy to have a one device in the house with Windows installed, for stuff that's still in the dark ages :D
