    Dunno, the pics I have from the 1950s look kind of different. Not like those shown here in this thread.

    These pictures of bombed out buildings look like some of what I saw in Germany in 1955 thru 1957. There were some in other countries as well.

    I was extremely upset when I saw these. Went up the Ruhr Valley and I nearly fell over in a faint. Cologne was an absolute mess. I was a child in America during WWII and I just could not imagine. England had some very bad spots as did Scotland, Northern Ireland, The Netherlands, and Belgium as well.

    @Terry Coywin
    When I was looking at the pics I just thought: what a striking contrast that was between the two worlds and what impact it must have had on people's mind either way. I don't know if you read my post to Ed Wilson some time ago where I mentioned and quoted a passage from the Weizsäcker speech.
    As devastating as all that was, he reminded us of the cause: "But we must not regard the end of the war as the cause of flight, expulsion and deprivation of freedom. The cause goes back to the start of the tyranny that brought about war." He who sows the wind shall reap the whirlwind.

    That was my first thought, too, but I can't really see a radio? Were they so large und bulky? Here in Germany people had that "Volksempfänger" aka "Goebbelsschnauze" which was quite handy by comparison.
