There is some value to that, but as we all know, members of Congress can (and do) go to their party leaders and see if there's enough votes for the party to get what they want so those members can cast a meaningless vote and please their constituents.
In fitting the thread topic, this hard-hitting policy announced today... My enthusiasm and hope for any real change is dwindling as the GOP remains true to form. "Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has promised she will introduce a bill “ASAP” to back President-elect Trump’s idea to rename the Gulf of Mexico. In a post online, Greene shared a video of Trump pitching the idea to rename the body of water to the “Gulf of America.” “President @realDonaldTrump’s second term if off to a GREAT start,” the Georgia Republican said. “I will be introducing legislation ASAP to officially change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to its rightful name, the Gulf of America!”
I hope they take care of the pressing dangers before they worry about renaming something that has been allowed for a few hundred years. I try to stay out of politics, like the words of Caesar's 'The Drums of War', is what we are going through and rightly so in such a time as now, ' whip up the citizenry into a patriotic fevor' "and they will give up their rights". We already lost some of our Constitutional rights, free speech, with "more" HATE SPEECH law passed in 2021.private property protections with the 'asset forfeiture' they ca We need to be watchful of them all.
Just to raise some hairs and maybe sound idiotic at the same time but on the back side, since Joe is permanently closing down off shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico, then if there were no longer a Gulf of Mexico ? Dunno. Maybe it’s the same thing that if a murder changed his or her name, would the new named person still be a murderer. Of course.
I'm sure it would turn out like "the artist formerly known as Prince" at some point. A rose by any other name...
Silly yes but on the other hand, the Gulf is sitting next to North and South America so there is that. ( I’m doing such a great job of being the devil’s advocate)
Why are Americans so egotistical as to believe that we get to decide how various world locations/bodies of water are named? We don't own the Gulf and it has been named Gulf of Mexico for over 400 years. "While a name change is theoretically possible, such a decision cannot be made unilaterally, and other nations are not obligated to recognize it." So really... what is the point of this other than to cause MORE hard feelings between the US and Mexico. As a person who lives 40 miles from the Gulf, it will ALWAYS be the Gulf of Mexico to me. Why is time being wasted on stupid bullshit when there are many more pressing issues and a very limited time to deal with them?
As I said in another post, I don't think they are serious about it. It is a smokescreen to distract from what is coming down. Get the liberal media and others discussing these silly ideas that won't happen, so they don't see the preparations being made to undo all that needs undone.
I agree @Silver Begay. Trump et al. are using the same techniques the Democrats do. Simply create a bunch of distraction so many miss what is really going on. I do think Trump is serious about Greenland, but not so much about Canada. The Canadian thing was just to emphasize to Canadians how badly they were being abused by their government and to let the U.S. know that we are subsidizing the nation of Canada that once stood proudly on their own with a proud military. Trudeau allegedly told Trump that Canada could not exist if he pulled the subsidy. That is something Americans and Canadians should work together to repair. Make both America and Canada great again.
It is not just the "liberal media" that is discussing Trump's blather. It's the countries who are our allies that are being insulted. Reddit is full of pissed off Canadians; I guess they didn't get the memo.
I suspect it is like the U.S. The online complainers are a small number of loudmouths. The survey I saw said that 15% of Canadians are actually for joining the U.S., and I suspect most of those are in the prairie provinces and eastern B.C., as they want their gun rights back that Trudeau has taken away as well as lower taxes. 65% of Canadians in the survey were strongly against joining the U.S., but I suspect only a few took the notion seriously and even fewer of those would take the notion seriously.
I now see that a member of the Canadian Parliament has proposed taking Alaska and Minnesota off the hands of the U.S. Conservatives have responded that they want to keep Alaska, but letting Minnesota join Canada would be fine if they take Western Washington and perhaps Western Oregon as well. Lets see how this negotiation goes
