You have what is the Samsung equivalent of an iPod already, @Hal Pollner , and you can use this to download games with. Since you said that your modem has an antenna, you actually DO have WiFi, you just do not use it because you only use things that you have hardwired in; but the capability should be there to use the WiFi, once you have a device that can use that.
The purpose of the salesmen at Best Buy is not to tell you how to use your existing devices, but to sell you a new one and earn commission, even if you already have a device that will do the job perfectly well.

My suggestion would be to use the Samsung device and see how you like having a pocket game player before purchasing a new one, and then you will have a more complete idea of what you want if and when you do decide to purchase one.
Just in case, you have forgotten, here is a picture of the Samsung device, last known to be in your computer room, sitting on a side table.

 

Here is a video that will explain how to connect your Samsung (Galaxy?) to your WiFi, @Hal Pollner. When you first connected your computer to your modem , you probably had to put in an access code.
You will need that password to connect to your WiFi.
These are often located on the bottom of the modem, but sometimes, you just name your WiFi and create your own log-in passcode; so it depends on which you have done with yours, what your passcode will be to log in to your WiFi.
If you have a problem finding your password , then a call to your cable/internet company should be a quick way to get that information.

Make sure that you have charged up your device, and it is turned on, and then follow the instructions on this video to connect to your WiFi. From your picture, it looks like you have 2 pages of apps, so if you slide the page to the left, the second page should show up, and there is probably already an app for games, which might have some already pre-installed for you, and you can download lots more from the Samsung app store online.
At the top of your device is the App Store, (which is called “samsung apps”), and when you open that , you can then search for just about any kind of game you want to play.
Some apps are free, and some cost money, so you will need to have credit card information added into your device before you can purchase apps that cost money.
If you look on youtube for “samsung galaxy player”, there are a lot of videos that will explain how your Samsung device works in more detail.

 

I have never had a Samsung, or anything except Apple devices, @Hal Pollner ; but when I searched for Samsung players, it called them a Galaxy, and I assumed that was what your device was.
If it is something else, what is it called , if not the Samsung Galaxy ?
A model number would help, too You might find that on the back of the device (that is where it is on an iPod or other Apple device), and also it should be in settings.
There is an icon on the front of your device that looks like a gearbox,and that is the settings icon; tap on that, and it is going to show you whether you are connected to WiFi, as well as what the model number of the device is.

I believe that the reason you are getting “network unavailable” is because you are not connected to WiFi.. When you look in settings at the WiFi information, it will show you a list of all of the nearby WiFi connections, and they should show the name of the connection, and probably a padlock icon.
You have to choose your WiFi from the list and then connect to that, using your WiFi name and password . Until you connect the device to the internet, it is not going to be able to go online, just like your computer can’t go online until it is connected.
It probably seems difficult at this point, but once it is done, then it will automatically connect to your WiFi signal, and you can also connect to any free WiFi, like at the restaurant where you go for your dinners. Almost all businesses provide free WiFi now, so you should be able to connect just about anywhere that you are going to be using the device to play games .

Also, you probably have an icon on the device for games, and you might try tapping on that and see if there are some games that are pre-loaded onto the device that you can start playing, even without being connected to the internet.
