I seldom eat lunch but today that warm-from-the-sun beefsteak tomato was beckoning. I had my first tomato sandwich of the season... fresh white bread, thick sliced tomato, plenty of mayo, salt and pepper. Heaven.
I was out running errands and stopped by Sheetz, an east coast gas station/convenience store. You get 2 hot dogs for 99¢ with your Sheetz discount card. I had those and some Fritos. The dogs go down fine, but the Fritos give me heartburn.
The cupboards were nearly bare again today. A bag of frozen boneless skinless chicken thighs was sitting in an otherwise empty freezer. Boiled one thigh just to the point of heating to the center. Cut it up into pieces. Tossed them in plain old flour with pepper and fried in butter. The chicken was really tender and juicy. Turned out well, but I'm easy to please. Cooked some rice using the water the chicken was boiled in with some parsley flakes and celery seed. Made some gravy from what was left in the skillet after frying. Nothing went to waste. All I needed was a vegetable. There was none.
Another shopping trip to Charlottesville, another Chinese buffet [literally] under my belt. A friend told me that they offer head-on Black Pepper Shrimp on the dinner buffet.
We don't usually eat lunch, but today I made biscuits because I have a new jar of lemon curd. My husband requested a sausage patty for his biscuit so we ended up eating biscuits, sausage, and lemon curd. Now it's nearly 3:30 and we aren't hungry so probably will just have snacks instead of dinner.
We drove over to the beach today to try out a restaurant. I had a bowl of the best clam chowder I've ever had, full of big chunks of tender clams. Then I had an oyster basket with really good hushpuppies, but the oysters were disappointing. My fault for ordering oysters in June. I should know better.
I love me some clam chowder (New England style.) I went to a nice restaurant a while ago, and their "fried oysters" were nothing but balls of batter with minced oysters stirred in. They did not sit well, either with my wallet or in my stomach.
Oh, it's New England style clam chowder for me. I've never seen the attraction of the Manhattan style. If I'm going to have the red broth, it needs to be conch chowder.
