Oh dear, @Ken Anderson it sounds like you are TTHRb ( Tent Tarp Hammock Rainbow) phobic but chose to be light in the hiking boots at the same time. Such a quandary. Perhaps I can help. Get a bison hide tepee with poles and a burro, and let the ass do the work. Those flimsy lightweight commie-made tents tarps and hammocks, camo or no, are the downfall of camping in the USA. I also might suggest carrying just an ax and a large knife and making your own shelter. A lean-to made from poles and evergreen branches can provide good shelter all the while breathing. All this synthetic stuff doesn't breathe well. The only reason one of our local hobo camps was found was that one fool used a blue tarp. Had he used old extra heavy browned canvas, it might have escaped my keen eye. His refusal to man up and carry the extra weight led to his eviction.

I'm seventy years old, and I don't want to carry a canvas tent. We used them in Boy Scouts, but they were brought in by truck. I walk in, and I'm quite capable of building my own shelter. I've done it many times, but if I am going to be camping out for only a couple of days, I don't want to spend the first day building a shelter.

I think the high-end camping gear is terrific, except for the colors. Tents or hammocks pack down to a very compact size and weigh next to nothing, allowing me to carry other stuff that adds to my comfort level.

The only outdoor equipment I am even remotely interested in, is a hammock and I guess a grill. I don't care what color the hammock is, as long as it is comfy and someone else puts it up. As for the grill, I feel pretty much the same way.

Teresa it may work if they ever slept on one, you can adjust the firmness by putting in or letting out more air. We took them to hotel hubbys brother and his wife were staying in. His brother wasn't too happy but we were.

The only camping I've ever been interested in is a 5 star hotel.

For the last 20 years, camping for me is staying at a motel and having to use my wedge which is usually a sleepless night. The only places I have slept for the last 10 years are my comfy adjustable bed or the hospital and I found their adjustable bed rather uncomfortable and only slept (interrupted) one night out of three.

I need a riser just to use the john. I am pretty sure sleeping on the ground is out. Maybe in my car? But I know how to DO all the outside stuff if people want info while we are in the woods.;)
