Am working on my second order of seeds--medicinal and herbal. No sure what I will do with them when it is time to put them outdoors. My seed dreams are usually too big for my gardens. Mostly I do food.
Fedex notified me that my package (Classic 7 from Ebay) has been delayed in Salt Lake City and won't be here till Sunday. I'm sifting through seed packets to find something new to experiment with. I have narrowed it down to kohlrabi or dwarf okra. I'm also going to order some "bush" cucumber seeds from my new catalog. I have not tried a bush variety in the AG, and I hope there is a parthenocarpic bush type.
I love kohlrabi! We use to plant that in our garden every year. Once upon a time, long long, ago, I started kohlrabi seeds in peat pot containers that I grew under grow lights. One year I hand planted around 100 kohlrabi plants in the garden. That was a time when I was still young enough to get down on the ground on my hands and knees, and dig 100 small holes and plant seedlings; and not need a tube of Ben Gay or Aspirin to help me make it through the night.
I've been thinking that kohlrabi might not work well in an Aerogarden, so I'll save those seeds for my spring raised beds. You should buy an Aerogarden to play with; it's fun to have fresh herbs growing in the kitchen!
I grow green onions from grocery store "roots" since I love green onion tops. You can see them on the far right of this picture, next to the Fairy Tale eggplant... And if I were the guy in the video, I'd have separated the onion sets at first planting instead of when they had grown into a clump. It would be easy to cut them apart at this stage and then transplant to soil...
Very nifty @Mary Stetler. I don't think I have tried that. It would save you trouble if you usually buy sets.
Have you tried leeks or shallots @Beth Gallagher ? I agree that kohlrabi would be better in a raised bed than an AG, although you grow an amazing amount of stuff in your AG.
No, I haven't tried leeks or shallots. The only true root vegetable I have grown from seed is radishes.
Leeks are pretty big. Besides, the "grocery store" green onions do great in the AG. I just cut the green part off and put the root into the AG basket. In 3-4 days I have more onion tops. I have had the same ones in that small AG for a couple of months now.
Leeks don't necessarily get real big. The short-season leeks tend to be much smaller, but if you do okay with the onions, great!
I got the new/old Classic 7 AG from Ebay on Saturday. Finally got around to opening the box and everything was still factory wrapped! I'm thrilled with this purchase. I might even try growing the included seed pods that expired in 2007. Sticker on the bottom of the machine...
