The A1 Diner - Gardiner, Maine Originally built in the 1920's as a garage with a lunch counter attached. The garage was replaced with a Worcester Lunch car in 1947. The car was placed in front of another building on steel stilts alongside a bridge. The kitchen is now in the building behind the diner car and food is passed through a hole cut in the wall.
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is my favorite picture of a diner. Somehow, it reminds me of a time when I lived in New York.
Weaver D's - Athens, Georgia The rock band R.E.M. were frequent customers at Weaver D's early in their career and adopted the Weaver D's slogan "Automatic for the People" as the name of one of their most popular record albums.
The Martha Washington Diner "On April 23, 1930, the B&O Railroad debuted a new richly appointed dining car named Martha Washington. The Martha Washington was the first successfully air-conditioned railroad car. It was called "a resort on wheels." (Baltimore Sun files)
