This scene from the 1982 classic Diner features Steve Guttenberg, Tim Daly and Paul Reiser. The perfect example of a story about nothing.

Diner - The whole left side of the menu scene

    The Diner

Calling an eating joint the Diner is as natural as pulling baby teeth, I suppose, but in my long living, I have only eaten in one place labeled with that name, the Diner.

It was in Los Angeles. I was working in my capacity as Purchasing Agent, in hopes of tying down an annual contract to furnish my company with rubber gaskets used to connect and seal concrete, aluminum, and PVC plastic pipe which we manufactured.

While in a hotel room and planning my tomorrow’s work schedule, I thought of a teenage friend whom I had gone to school with for several years. His family had lived in LosAngeles when his daddy was injured in a auto accident, his back broken. His mother had never worked outside the home but after the accident she had to find outside work . She sent my friend, Jimmy, to Texas to live with his grandmother and a sister to live with an aunt. Always when we discussed what we wanted to do after we finished school, Jimmy always said he was going home to help his mother. He rode motorcycles and because he did, I bought one.

I decided to try to find my friend. I made several calls and lucked out. I found Jimmy’s sister. She said she remembered my name because her brother had mentioned me from time to time. Further, she said Jimmy was in Baja, California and would be home tomorrow evening.

The next day we got together by phone and arranged to breakfast the following morning. He suggested a place about halfway between us. I pulled up in front of the place and noticed a boat like trailer with little cages attached to a motorcycle.

I immediately thought that bike belonged to Jimmy. It did. We were both early to breakfast. When I entered I noticed him right off, he not much changed from the days when I knew him. The place where we had breakfast together was called “The Diner.”

I have seen such places in videos and read about them but never before or after have I eaten in another place labeled the Diner.

By the way, I asked my friend,Jimmy if he’d ever bought or driven a car. He said yes he had. He said his sister bought a new s Buick and didn’t like it, shed had driven smaller cars so he bought her buick and she bought another small car. Jimmy said he drove his buick to Baja California once to check out some exotic animals. Jimmy owned seven stores that sold exotic animals from around the world. He said he drove back home in heavy traffic. He said he couldn’t tell where his right side wheels were on the pavement and was so uncomfortable and scared that he promised the Lord if he helped him get back home safely and in one piece, he’d never drive a car again. He said he hadn’t. Said he owned two motorcycles, a Harley and a BMW.

That’s the last time we were in touch, at that breakfast in Los Angeles, at the Diner.
