You are right. No religious or political ideology, not even civics nor the Pledge of allegiance. Lots of kids are being moved to special science, math, higher computer skill schools instead of staying the regular schools. I remember my kids in Public schools being bullied with no recourse. Not much respect. And with teacher's hands tied, now, teachers don't get much respect either. So they end up instructing a few 'good' kids and just moving on the rest.
No one can speak for every school, but overall, the public school system is more about indoctrination than education. While it may be true that the indoctrinators consider what they do to be education (as in Chinese re-education camps), that doesn't change the reality.
Good evening to all- Mr. Anderson- With all due respect to you and your opinion, the public schools are not about any kind of indoctrination. Public school presents material to students of all ages and abilities appropriate to their learning needs and abilities, there is no indoctrination unless you consider basic rules of acceptable conduct and behavior as indoctrination. For each grade there are very clearly stated educational goals and objectives which the teacher must meet. There is no room for indoctrination. And I resent you labeling teachers as indoctrinators similar to Chinese re-education camps. Perhaps if you had spent your life working very hard to help students learn skills and develop abilities in public school, you might have a more accurate and true vision of what public schools are all about. I don't know where you are getting your information, but could I recommend you check your sources. More people have gained more and developed more from the public schools of the U.S, than any other public institution. And that does not mean "indoctrination" you all be safe and keep well- Ed
Good morning to all- Mr. Anderson- Your opinion is not understood at all, and is certainly not agreed to. Anyone who thinks the public schools indoctrinate the students is sadly mistaken and mislead. Any teacher who tried to "indoctrinate" the students in any way would very shortly be sacked and out of a job. You all be safe and keep well- Ed
Reading the thread title, I always wonder whose kids are being made stupid. Does anyone on here think their kids/grandkids are stupid? I know mine aren't...
The title may say that, but the OP reference is to making kids dumber, which I agree with, although the word that I would use would be "ignorant."
Semantics aside, I still gotta ask where all of the stupid/ignorant/dumb kids are, and who are the parents? IMHO, the declining test scores are not a good yardstick to use.
Good afternoon to all- The previous poster makes an excellent point. The scores which kids/schools/districts get on standardized achievement tests are very poor indicators of learning. The main thing the standardized tests show is how good kids are at taking a test- not how much they have learned. This means that teachers now have to teach specific test taking skills instead of academic material And take a school or district which is located in an affluent, English-speaking community and compare the test scores to another district which is primarily lower class kids, non-English speaking kids, and poor families- and you will see a difference in the test scores. Not because the lower class, non-English speaking kids didn't learn anything, it's just that the standardized test is written in a foreign language to them. There is so much that could be said and written about the public schools today, and very much that could be said about the people who seem to enjoy denigrating and casting stones at the public school. It's a shame that much of the "information" these public school naysayers toss around so easily is wrong, wrong, and very wrong. The public schools are nothing more than a mirror of the society and culture of the kids that attend there. The schools don't make kids poor. The schools don't make kids speak something other than English. And the schools don't make kids come to school from horrible homes and crazy "parents". But the schools do make things better for most kids. And Mr. Anderson- I am glad you liked my previous post. thank you. you all be safe and keep well- Ed
There are dozens of examples but perhaps this is the most pitiful…. https://youtube.com/shorts/bbDm9NaQZ1g?si=GvLTRUwNL1ZiFcKZ
My middle daughter is mentally challenged but a bit of a savant. I asked her recently, what could have been done to remedy the bullying situations in school. She said, she didn't thing there was anything. I asked her why not. She said it didn't seem to matter what the teachers did. She thought that the parents should be able to do THEIR job better, loving and guiding the unruly kids.
Ask some teenager to show you Vermont on a map, or tell you what city is the capitol of Oregon. Then ask them what is 25% of a dollar. Eye-opening.
Uh….what argument? I wasn’t even replying to your post but merely posting a somewhat tragic example which follows within the parameters of the OP. I haven’t posted in this thread in quite a long time so whatever “argument” you believe to be in existence……….ain’t.
