Ina, heat rises as does the smoke so they have to be placed high up. I don't know if high on the wall would work. I wouldn't put one directly in the kitchen or it will go off every time you cook anything….but certainly close. Don't put them directly in bedrooms or bathrooms or closets. Hallways are good…that would take care of several bedrooms. The fire department will change them for you if you are unsteady on a ladder.
Thank you @Lara Moss , that means if I place two in the hall and one in the living room, that should do it. @Bonnie Thomas , by your information three should do it. I do know Allstate would love an excuse to not pay out if I did have a fire. I stay with them, because no one else will insure this all wood structure. We just continued the policy in place when we purchased the home back in 1990. @Diane Lane , I'm sorry your having to deal with migraines. I do not, but a close friend of mine does. When she has one, and I call, she will tell me immediately, because they make her behave very rudely, and she doesn't want to hurt anyone's feelings. I hope you feel better soon.
@Bonnie Thomas, That's about the size of my home, and it was built in 2001 and that's how many they put in. A little bit of overkill especially the 2 that are only about 2 ft apart. My home is shaped like a U but with straight lines.
I agree with all of that. Yes, hallways cover a lot of rooms usually. Many times the boxes that smoke detectors come in have diagrams of where to put them to be most effective.
Ina, I don't know how big your house is but I think you only need 2. I only have 2….one at the end of the downstairs hallway near the master bedroom and one in the upstairs hall at the same end of the hall. I never paid attention until now but they're both on the other end of the hallways from the kitchen.
This is a very rough sketch of my house of 2500 sq. ft. So what do you think, 2 in the hall and one in the living room? The walls are 6" to 8" thick. I think if measured the master bedroom and the living room are close in sq. footage.
Yes Chrissy I can see that it is. I'm lucky, I have my GS here and my son doesn't live far. It would be great if there was some kind of organization like seniors helping seniors where able seniors could help each other out using their own particular skills.
Good morning to you all, just getting up to another sunny morning at 17c and sunny, 33c (90s) promised later. Not sure what to today but a walk was planned, so will see how the day turns out. See you all later,
Ina, regarding smoke detector locations….Definitely one outside the MB. I'm afraid to recommend anything else for fear I'd mislead you because I'm no expert. That's an excellent sketch though so I'd take it to the fire dept and ask them, plus they might install it for you for free. They're all about safety so that's what they do. Don't hesitate to ask them.
Good morning, Terry. Sorry, this is all "google image" had when I entered "Good morning Terry". Just be glad I didn't copy & paste the gigantic version.
