How odd. It's an interesting website, Don. See if you can find it by searching for "VanishingGeorgia.com". There are pictures of a lot of towns and locations, even Moultrie! @Nancy Hart , you might enjoy poking around the website, too. https://vanishinggeorgia.com/category/athens-ga/
(I suppose this reply ought to be in another thread, but I couldn't find any that it would get merged into.) Thanks Beth. That is an interesting website. He devotes a lot of space to The Union Primitive Baptist Church. I pass by it dozens of times a year. Sad to watch the building gradually deteriorate. It's good this man takes lots of pictures. Then it's not so sad when things get torn down. There was a small white wood frame (now brick) church directly across the road from this one, now called just The Union Baptist Church. The locals referred to the spot as "The Twin Churches," as a reference point if you were asking for directions. The two churches are not related according to the comments on that website. When they remodeled the one across the road, they got the steeple crooked, and it bothered me. It must have bothered others also, because it got straightened out eventually. I just learned that Primitive Baptist churches do not have steeples.
Peak: Drove in to Charlottesville and bought a couple of canning books at Barnes & Noble. Pit: The store is in the largest strip mall in CVille, and it's Christmas time. I spent nearly 50 years outside of DC, and since I've moved to the sticks, I have lost my tolerance for crowds.
Pit of the week so far After a couple of days practicing on my keyboard, yesterday's lesson just threw me for a loop with jargon that I could not relate to. Phases like half quarter, whole quarter which sent me to Youtube, OMG!!! Ta; Ta ha; Ta ha ha ha . What?!! I went downhill from there. I closed up the books, turned the keyboard off and did laundry frustrated as all-get-out. I can't do this. Peak later on I realized that I am a show-me-how person and I needed a book that would fit what I already know how to do. Thankfully, I had set aside one book that was for adults AND mentioned in the introduction playing by 'ear' that's me. I tell you I crack myself up when I think back on this.
John, did you not understand this 'jargon that I could not relate to.' The 'Ta; Ta ha; Ta ha ha ha' was related to the 'OMG!!!.' Oh, and don't get me started with an eighth note a whole, half and quarter notes stumped me. My musical education only went to the 3rd grade on a makeshift keyboard with letters on it while the teacher played the coordinating notes.
You don't need to know anything about eighth, quarter, half or whole notes, unless you are trying to play a song you've never heard before.
Peak: I got a new, faster, unlimited internet. I also got a new phone and a new watch. The whole shebang SAVES me $30 a month! Pit: I just went in to the Verizon store to see if I could get a better deal on my internet.
Awesome news…..Well done, @John Brunner ! Now you can watch all those cooking videos anytime you want to, and you will love the newer phone and Apple Watch. We need DETAILS …… what phone and watch did you and up getting ? Now you need to look at iPads…….just sayin”. (You know I am right)
I could buy new stuff, but see no reason to do so.Plus I do not want an bunch of stuff laying around - alone someday. Besides I am having to replace some of our 34 year old stuff that has pooped out.. my toaster, my grater, curling iron. never worked right anyway... sounds of washer are screaming in me ear- sigh, always something ain't it?
Pit: From going twice to a very crowded Cowboy Christmas Gift Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center last Friday and this last Tuesday and/or going to a Contestant Autograph Session last Friday, I got a pretty sore throat this last Wednesday. Since Wednesday evening, I've been doing saltwater gargling and bought a box of Cepacol Lozenges for sore throat and putting on our bedroom humidifier. Both the Cepacol and saltwater gargling help quite a bit. Perhaps, won't be able to have buffet dinner with SIL and her daughter this weekend when they come out here from So California. Just too many people in the casino/hotel to eat there or even watch the final rodeo there (on big screen) tomorrow evening. Will have to limit our time with them. Peak: Was able to buy, one for me and one for my wife, a 2024 National Finals Rodeo jacket and loved getting all of the rodeo contestant autographs and photos of us with them.
Luckily, yes they did. Actually, the jacket and seeing/getting autographs/pictures, was the main reason to go to this gift show. The gift show was nice, but like a few other times we've went, it's getting more and more "glitz/glam" involved in it from young ladies wanting/requiring those two things. However, that's what Las Vegas is really about, "glitz/glam" and, without a doubt, money/gambling and big stage shows/concerts.
