If you are doing an iMessage, that goes directly from one Apple device to another Apple device. However, if someone texts from their phone, then it does not matter what kind of phone they have. So, an iMessage only works from an Apple device, and can be sent to their Apple ID email, as opposed to a text, which comes from a phone number.
I just got a survey invitation, and in the answer block, it has the microphone symbol. As far as I can see , I always have the option to use VTT, regardless who I am texting to.

I don't text, I let Jakw do that, I am thinking of getting a senior phone with bigger screen and type pad. After the expense of these dogs and van that will be a while.
I think people text too much, see young and old with phones glued to their heads in public.

I've seen commercials for those phones, and wonder if some of them aren't Medicare-covered. I'm having a hard time finding anything on that topic because it seems nearly everyone can get a free government phone.

I prefer texting to answering the phone by voice. Texting, I know who I'm talking to and have time to think about what I'm going to say. Of course, that depends on who it is. I'd rather talk to family and friends than text them.

We feel the same. Jake won't text anyone but maybe a picture to family. We always talk on phone to them though.

I've known parents who like the ability to text messages to their school-aged kids so the kids can read them in between classes. I can see how that would be handy, even though we all somehow managed without it.

I text as I hate to talk on the phone and I don't want to interrupt others, just as I don't want to be interrupted in whatever I am doing. A text you can answer at your convenience.

Yup. You don't get "hung up on the phone" with texts. It's an interesting phrase because if you hung up, you wouldn't get hung up.

Texting has its place. However, like many think it has become over used. I still want to hear a persons voice. Family for one. I can get a better feel for ' how are you ?' when asked. You can more words in edgewise;)
I text by voice mainly..arthritic fingers and wrists make too much texting difficult. Of course word errors abound.
I find it rude to go see some one -invited or not and have to compete with another person on the end of your keyboard !
Just like um Mark and his 24-7 TV even during meals. I wanna whack him up side that head - talk to me boy :D
