Shirley: "What about the diseases they carry? The diseases that will spread throughout our society? What about the criminals who are among them?"

The exact same questions were asked about the Irish, Italians & Jews at the beginning of the last century.

Did they show up at our borders in caravans paid for by who knows who or did they come in legally?

I lived on the border for more than twenty years, and worked as a paramedic there. I have many friends and former students and co-workers there yet - in EMS, FD, and PD. If you don't believe that there are serious issues with disease at the border, then you are clueless. Diseases that most people believe to have been eradicated in this country are almost commonplace along the border, and our porous borders are probably the cause of the periodic epidemics of strange diseases that we see.

As for criminality, I don't know what to say. If you don't believe that crime is a problem among people who cross our borders illegally, then I don't know what to say. Most of the crime on the border is committed by people who are here illegally. That's how they earn enough money to make their way to wherever else they plan to go. That's how they earn their living. Not all of them of course, but those who aren't earning a living illegally are on the public dole.

Of course, you can believe whatever you want to believe, or whatever CNN wants you to believe. You can believe in unicorns, or the tooth fairy, for that matter.

This is a win win for Trump no matter what the Democrat do if they give him the money for the wall it get built and works they lose. If they do not give him the money next election Trump can go to the people and say that the Democrats do not care for your safety. You elected me to help keep you safe and you chanted for a wall and the Democrats stopped that from happening. Give me the majority and we will be safe.

@Ken Anderson I believe you when you say there is more disease on the border than elsewhere but I think most of that is that Mexican citizens don't seek medical help as readily as Anglo citizens mostly for economal reasons. And those already here illegally won't seek medical attention. Your remark about watching CNN and believing what CNN wants me to believe is telling and uncalled for. It is true I don't watch Fox News because I feel they are less than a quality news organization.

Mark Morgan has one opinion and no doubt it would help in some areas. The way this is working in our national politics, I believe, deserves a strong opposition, therefore I oppose it.
Yes, I do feel the same way. It is political and not personal.

I do know that Chaga's Disease now exists in the Southwest and California that it was brought in by migrants after it had been exterminated here in the U.S. Of course TB is also a problem, but it doesn't get into the blood supply as Chaga's has.

There were NO LAWS at all before 1882, which were very lax and had virtually no impact until 1924. UNLESS you were Chinese.

"The first federal general immigration law was enacted in 1882. It prohibited from entering the U.S. “any convict, lunatic, idiot, or any person unable to take care of himself or herself without becoming a public charge.” In other words, unless you were physically or mentally incapable of taking care of yourself, you were in — unless you were Chinese..............Beyond these restrictions, however, federal immigration laws remained relatively lax: If you were an able-bodied, non-Chinese person, you could come “legally” for several more decades. You didn’t have to speak a word of English or be literate in any language at all. In fact, it was not until 1917 that Congress required that immigrants pass a literacy test, and even then they could pass in any language, not just English....................When a massive influx of new immigrant groups came at the turn of the 20th century — Italians from Southern Europe and Jews from Eastern Europe, largely — a backlash began to build. In 1924, President Coolidge signed into law the National Origins Act, the primary aim of which was to severely restrict the flow of immigrants from Southern and Eastern Europe. The new law required for the first time that immigrants to the U.S. have visas, introducing the concept of “having papers” to American immigration policy..

    PS--
    Shirley Martin said:
"Did they show up at our borders in caravans paid for by who knows who"

Gosh Shirley, until there is proof of the veracity of that statement I guess we'll all just go by our emotions on the subject. The "caravans" weren't staying in hotels and eating in restaurants or driving cars..............why couldn't it have just been their own bright idea? Like it was for the Irish, the Italians, & the Jews back in the bad old days?

Whether you seek medical attention or not, a 3rd-World disease is a 3rd-World disease, so I don't see how that would change anything. That fact is that we have a lot of dangerous stuff coming across our border.

It used to be, in this country, that we wouldn't admit people who were sick, but that's clearly not the case anymore, particularly when our border is uncontrolled.

I don't watch any of the network news shows, but I listen to the news from ABC, CBS, NBC, and Fox, and actively seek out news from other sources. I have watched CNN in hotel lobbies a few times and I can see that someone would have a warped idea of what's going on in the world if they depended on CNN. Having seen CNN, the only way that I could understand someone truly believing that there was no crisis at the border and that illegals don't contribute to the crime problem in this country is to think that maybe they spent their day sucking up misinformation from CNN. People don't come up with that stuff on their own.

hey just showed up by the thousands on ships, and begged entrance, just as these southern folks are. They were quarantined at Ellis Island First and second class disembarked at the Port of NY while the steerage and third went through the cattle pens at Ellis Island. There are several other immigration port with quarantine facilities.
The vast majority just showed up,not knowing whether they would be allowed in or not, just like these folks to the south are doing.
It is not a crime to ask for asylum, in my mind it is a crime not to efficiently vet these people as family units,to be rejected or accepted then let the chips fall where they may.
It is only a crisis because the conservatives in this nation always choose the side of fear, hate and prejudice, and refused to properly administrate and fund any effort except to deny and block these folks.
Please tell me you didn't swallow his drugs and terrorist lines? Please no one could be that naive .

No news organizations is perfect. Almost all have individuals working for them I find obnoxious. I rather believe someone who watches a more moderate news is somewhat better off than someone who watches nothing. But I suppose that is beside the point. All that is not to say we don't have problems on the southern border. We do. But we don't have a crisis. That's the president's terminology. Knowing you are an intelligent individual and have worked at many organizations that have recognized this and knowing you don't like to lose an arguement, I will concede to you suggesting you may be right in part but the political personalities involved do not allow me to think at all we have anything close to a crisis on the southern border.
