@Shirley Martin made a statement about the plan for tariffs and I believe it’s an “either / or” proposition. If China and some of the other countries will not start buying U.S. products proportionate to the amount we buy, then the plan to apply a tariff on the goods we buy from them will probably be implemented. It does kind of worry me a little though. It wasn’t too long ago that Japan was buying up all the U.S. lumber they could get their hands on but it had to all be top quality stuff which left us with standard and less than standard quality. Because of the demand on both ends, the standard stuff we had to buy was priced almost the same as the good lumber we bought before Japan took over the market. We were also told that a tariff was imposed on Canadian beef so that the American ranchers would have a better playing field in the beef industry but instead of prices dropping when more American beef was being sold, the prices went up again I suppose, due to the demand or just plain greed.
Tariffs are a very dangerous thing to mess with. I believe Trump knows what he is doing and that he is using them as a negotiating tool, as he has done with so much else. We have supported the entire world since WWII, and it is time to stop. Other nations have been feeding off us, even though countries like Germany, Japan, Britain and France no longer need support. When NATO tried to launch an airstrike against Libya during the Obama Administration, Obama opted out. Europe discovered that their military was so weak and that they had relied on the U.S. for protection for so long, they couldn't even launch a strike from Italy across the Mediterranean without American help. Pretty sad!! That is part of what Trump is doing, and why the Eurozone is so upset--they may have to pay more of their own way in the world. I think everything will turn out well and friends will be friends again, but perhaps the relationships will be more balanced. The real target, however, is China. Bill Clinton opened up the U.S. to victimization by China during his administration, as China funded much of his Presidential campaign. He criticized G.W. Bush for being too soft on China, but Clinton's behind-the-scenes action was to basically sell much of the U.S. market to China to fund their military. He even sold them a missile factory.
