It has stopped snowing here, and we are to have two snow-free days before it starts once more...at least in the forecast. It was up around freezing yesterday, but it is below 20 F. at the moment here.
As it turns out, I was probably right, or at least close to it. Caribou, Maine, which is north of here (near our camp) is reporting record snowfall this year, with 198 inches of snow, which is 16.5 feet of snow. I can't see over the banks to the trail I have shoveled to my compost pile, and shoveling is difficult because I have trouble throwing the snow high enough to clear the banks. According to Al Gore, global warming was supposed to have put us underwater by now, so I'm thinking his math skills aren't so good. Of course, that doesn't mean that they have more than 16 feet of snow on the ground because that figure would include snow that came before a couple of meltdowns before it stayed.
We had plowable snow last night but today we're having our biggest melt of the season because it's nearly forty degrees, and it is supposed to rain later today, so that should knock things down even further. Although we'll probably have more snows, I am thinking that winter is effectively over.
They lie frequently, @Ken Anderson. We are getting April weather in March now. It is 37 F. and alternating between rain and snow. What a mess!
This last weekend it was in the mid and upper 80's. A number of boats were on the St. John's River. We went to Mayport for lunch and stopped by a popular ramp area there. I touched the water...………pretty darn cold! Yesterday's temp was about 87. Average here for March is 74 and today (Tuesday) it will be a high of 71. Where we are moving to, Winter Storm Warnings are in effect with up to 8" of snow possible. Very typical for this time of year. But, a week from this coming Thursday, the high there will be 59. Basically, that is shorts weather there.
Although it is getting late and warm, what these folks can do with ice is truly amazing. https://www.icealaska.org/sculptures/2019-one-person-classic/item/opc_site-01-2019.html
We're not getting plowable snow but it's been snowing here for the past couple of days. Usually, it warms up to a couple of degrees above freezing at some point during the day long enough to melt it, though. Nevertheless, it's not very springlike.
It was supposed to snow some yesterday, but it hit 55 F. and was sunny instead. That is the warmest it has been this year so far, but there is still snow in the orchard and on the gardens. The major lakes and rivers in the area are still frozen, but the ice is very rotten. There are still brave souls traveling on the ice with snowmobiles, but I wouldn't do it. When you head into tons nearby, the snow is gone except where it has piled over winter. It is supposed to rain today (possible), and it is cloudy, but I doubt the precip will fall.
